Character Background:

Gareki technically has no family. His birth parents are unknown and during the 15 years he’s lived, he’s seen almost nothing but poverty and death, leading him to distrust first before anything. “Never take candy from strangers,” they say.

His body was sold by his parents at the young age of 8, and being the smallest among the other sold children, he was frequently the target of bullying. They pulled his hair and tied him up, preventing him from getting his daily meals. Ironically, this hindrance to a proper nutrition saved him from a life of slavery and prostitution. The “food” the children were fed was mixed with a strange concoction that made them ill. Full of the strength that an 8 year old has (despite not eating), Gareki managed to escape from captivity while the ship was caught in a storm, and was washed up onto the shore of the Illuminated Town Karasuna. Here, a gentle and beautiful woman named Tsubaki saved him. Gareki, not knowing what kindness was, initially remained aloof to his new “family”. He didn’t even know that meals were actually meant to be eaten together until the twins Tsubaki took care of (Yotaka and Tsubame) had to teach him. Tsubaki depended on a man to help pay for their food and the very clothing on their backs. Gareki notes that though Tsubaki loved the man, he betrayed and killed her.

Gareki, in his childish desperation to try and provide Tsubaki and the others with a better life, took it upon himself to get a job and pay for what that man had been providing for so long. Still, he was, in the end, powerless to stop Tsubaki’s murder. The man worked to make normal humans into “post-humans”, beings that are the result of a twisted cell-modifying medicine, and used Tsubame and Yotaka as lab-rats. Going berserk and needing human flesh in order to finalize the transformation, it is revealed that Yotaka was the one who killed Tsubaki, when his human consciousness was suppressed by the “post-human” forming within him. Creating “post-humans” is the product of an organization, Kafka’s, illegal genetic research and manipulation. The National Defense Organization, Circus, is the prime force acting against Kafka. Circus is the “police” of Karneval, composed of elite members with both intelligence and incredible fighting abilities, who capture criminals (or “post-humans”) on unannounced “simultaneous raids”. They patrol via air ships and Gareki is currently boarding in Circus’ Second Ship. In order to calm the hearts of the townspeople subject to the surprise raids, Circus puts on fabulous carnivals, where its members actually participate, whether it be in attractions or dressing up in silly (yet adorable) costumes.

So, now the question is, how exactly did Gareki get involved with Circus?

Well, it all started with a boy, Nai, and this is where the story of Karneval begins. Gareki happens upon Nai as he’s robbing a “post-human”, Mine’s, mansion. Nai was taken by Mine to do some inappropriate things with him, and though Gareki was going to just take his spoils and leave without the white-haired Niji hybrid, he decided that there was some merit in taking Nai, as well. Nai had with him an old Circus Identification bracelet, the only thing left behind by his “family”, Karoku, before he disappeared. When the bracelet is stolen by a corrupted officer of the Security Force (a department that works together with Circus), Gareki agrees to help Nai get it back, in hopes of keeping the bracelet for himself. Nai makes a promise with the other boy, saying that he will ask Karoku, once they find him, if Gareki can keep the bracelet.

Curious of Nai’s existence, Circus’ Second Ship captain, Hirato, has his subordinates, Tsukumo and Yogi, protect Nai and Gareki from the “post-humans” and Kafka. However, Gareki is, essentially, disposable to Circus and it is revealed that the only reason he’s kept in protection is to keep Nai calm and content. Still, the two boys build a strong friendship with the three members of Circus, though Gareki never admits that they are “friends”. Gareki knows that he is on a level far below people like Yogi, and yearns to become stronger in order to protect those closest to him.

Abilites/Special Powers: Unlike members of Circus, who are provided with super-human abilities, Gareki is a normal human. Still, he makes an excellent pick-pocket, is skilled at breaking locks with a hairpin (making him a pretty good Robin Hood, too), is as good at working with machines as he is moving his own fingers, and is handy with a gun. Also quite a ladies’ man, though he is oblivious to their swooning.

Third-Person Sample:

All was quiet on the Second Ship. Yogi managed to pull Nai away from Gareki and the two were probably playing a ridiculous game of hide-and-seek with Tsukumo right about now. Gareki, more than happy to not join them, remained lying in his bed, impressively ignoring Nai’s pleas. He casually flipped through a magazine that detailed the process of disassembling a flying ship. The mechanics of the Second Ship fascinated him and taking it apart would teach him more than by just lazily riding on it.

“Take this bolt out of that screw, then connect the red wire with the blue wire, then connect these two through the black wire, which is connected to the green wire to run the back engine, located below the right wing; and here’s where the resis --“ Gareki’s thoughts were suddenly cut short by a wild cry, followed by a series of stomping footsteps that seemed to grow closer and closer to the room. He turned on his bed to face the door, slouching against the window, and bringing the magazine to hide his face, perfectly masking his slight curiosity for the ruckus, behind the “how-to’s” of mechanics.

Yogi came bursting through the door, slamming right into its frames, unable to stop the violent speed of his running -- causing Gareki to mockingly roll his eyes. After nearly sobbing at the pain shooting through his left arm, Yogi began to ramble on about how he needed a place to hide and how Tsukumo had almost found him at his previous spot. He begged and begged, while simultaneously whipping his head left and right to see if Tsukumo was anywhere nearby.

“Hell no! I already told you I don’t want any part in this crap!” Gareki shouted out from behind his magazine.

Yogi continued to stammer excuses, and Gareki thought to himself that it would’ve been much more prudent for the golden-haired idiot to find another place than waste his time here. Gareki lowered the magazine and darted a fierce glare towards Yogi and his irritation mounted when Tsukumo and Nai both surprised Yogi with a light tap to his arm, followed by a victorious “We found you!” Yogi flailed about even more and Gareki threw down his magazine, leaping off from the top bunk and racing towards the door. He then proceeded to throw a series of insults, particularly aimed at Yogi, while Tsukumo remained as serious as ever, and Nai cowered in fear of Gareki’s explosion.

First-Person Sample:

[ Static fills the screen until a light thud gets the gadget working again. A pair of black eyes stare into the lens until they pan back to show a rather handsome, boyish face, framed in shocking onyx hair. The boy’s expression is blank, yet somehow, clearly disgruntled. ]

Don’t know how, but I guess I’ve stumbled upon an unknown part of the Ship. Those damn sheep didn’t even try to stop me, but this place seems pretty classified, considering how big it is. It’s almost like I’m in a whole ‘nother world.

[ He stands up straight to take a quick glance around his surroundings before focusing back on the camera. ]

All right. Old man, if you’re listening to this, go check out Nai. Something’s happened.

…Looks like it’s gonna take a while for me to get out of here.

[ Gareki scratches his head and frowns, realizing he doesn’t even have his goggles. He sighs and slams the video camera off. ]
