Chapter Seven - Inside out

Johnson had no qualms about leaving Jack to his own fate. She knew that he couldn’t die and would probably be an asset behind their lines. Giving Barrett the signal she pulled the rest of the team back down the corridor and out under the now disintegrated pillars. Barrett lay down covering fire as they made their tactical retreat. The M203 Grenade Launcher was devastating in the confines of the corridor leaving huge chunks of masonry blocking the Dalek’s advance. Their hover capabilities and force-field could not get them passed solid rock and they wasted a lot of time destroying the blocks of concrete so they could pass.

As Barrett ducked through the opening into the old section of the compound he was surprised to find only one Spiridon had made it. Ianto was trying to consol Webber for the loss of her brother and the three other Spiridons. He joined Evans and Alonso as they checked their weapons.

‘I’m out of ammunition and Alonso had no more round for the SIG. Johnson used the last of the shot gun shells back in the tunnel. How are you fixed? Barrett looked down at the Colt M4A3 cradled in his arms and ejected a single grenade from the launcher.

‘I ran out of rounds a few minutes ago. I’ve one grenade left and that’s it. What’s the problem with Ianto and the Spiridon?’ Evans nodded towards Ianto, who looked as if he were arguing with himself.

‘Apparently we left her brother back in the tunnel. She knows somehow that he’s still alive and wants to go back for him.’ Barrett shook his head.

‘Just let her go. Once that lot start running around on the surface we’ll be lucky to get back to the TARDIS in one peace without firepower.’ Johnson appeared covered in dust.

‘No one’s going back there… it’s a death trap. Use the last shell on the tunnel and lets get out of here.’ Without consulting Ianto or Webber Barrett reloaded the shell into the rocket launcher with an audible click. Aiming the 203 at the tunnel roof he shouted for everyone to step back. Before he pulled the trigger he saw four war Daleks heading towards them, guns ready.

‘Fire in the hole,’ he shouted and pulled the trigger. As the ceiling fell they all turned and ran. More supporting pillars collapsed and like a row of dominoes others followed.

They had been running for twenty minutes just managing to keep ahead of the falling roof as they retraced their steps through the compound. Finally a bellow of smoke belched out of the entrance as Ianto and Alonso dove for cover. The fresh air hit Johnson hard as she drew in a lung full of oxygen then dove to join Ianto and Alonso. Close behind Evans and Barrett almost staggered out of the entrance coughing and spluttering as they went. Looking around Ianto searched for any sign of Webber but couldn’t see anything. This didn’t surprise him, he realised. After all she was invisible. Standing, he dusted himself off and put out a hand for Alonso who took it with a smile. He was just about to say something when he noticed a ghostly apparition appear from the compound entrance.

He knew it was Webber immediately. Her naked body was outlined in fine dust showing every curve and shape of her muscular body as she moved. Smiling, he realised just how glad he was to see her alive. Putting out a hand he watched as she ignored it and walked passed him. As she drew parallel to him she stopped and seemed to gaze off into the distance. Behind him he noticed Johnson and Barrett stand, their mouths hanging open in amazement. As Evans joined them Ianto began to feel uneasy. Turning he looked in the direction Webber’s dust covered body was looking and he froze in horror. Standing before him where at least thirty war Daleks, their force-fields buzzing and their energy weapons set to kill and all pointed in their direction. Alonso walked up behind Ianto and placed a hand on his shoulder.

‘There’s only one human word to describe this situation… bugger.’

Jack just managed to pull up his pistol at the last minute sending the bullet slamming into the wall behind Omega.

‘Omega’s not one of them. The Doctor gave him the human factor. He’s survived over the years by not being noticed. When he saw I was in trouble he risked himself to save me and… he’s saved my life half a dozen times since then.’ Louise Ruth looked at Jack, pleading with him.

‘Louise… Ruth… is… my… friend… and… so… is… the… Doctor.’ At the name of the Doctor Jack lowered his pistol. Shaking his head he holstered the Webley and turning looked round the corner. Three gold Daleks lead by a black Dalek were heading their way at speed. Worse than that they had spotted him and were levitating so they could move faster.

‘I don’t want to bother you too much but there are a number of Daleks heading in this direction and I don’t think they’re friendly.’ Looking to her right she noticed two corridors heading off in different directions.

‘Which way out Omega… left or right?’ Louise Ruth asked as Jack motioned silently for them to hurry and make a decision.

‘Take… the… left… passage… Louise… Ruth… it… will… lead… you… to… the… outside.’ She shook her head then remembered Jack had smashed his eye stork.

‘What do you mean me? You’re coming with us.’ Omega’s dome moved from side to side.

‘Go… Louise… Ruth… I… will… hold… them… back… so… you… can… escape.’

‘No you don’t understand, you have to…’ Omega cut her off as Jack whispered in a loud voice for them to make a move.

‘I… understand… you… are… my… friend… you… must… go… so… you… can… live. The…Doctor… said… that… there… is… no… greater… love… than… to… lay… down… one’s… life… for… one’s… friends.’ Jack looked at Omega stunned into silence. A Dalek that could quote from the Bible… that knew the concept of love and could apply it… he was amazed. Tears ran down Louise Ruth’s face as she placed a hand on Omega’s damaged claw arm.

An explosion from behind them spurred Jack into action. Grabbing hold of Louise Ruth he dragged her towards the left hand corridor. They disappeared from view just as a group of war Daleks rounded the corner, lead by a single black Dalek.

Turning at the sound of the approaching Daleks Omega raised his primary weapon and fired.

Jack could see foot steps appear in the dust in front of him as he ran. Almost blinded by tears Louise Ruth followed as quickly as her leg would allow. She knew jack was right. If they’d stayed and tried to help Omega they would have been caught and exterminated before they made the entrance to the corridor. Even so, she thought, she wasn’t happy with the way things had worked out. After seeing what had happened to Codal and Latep, for a moment, she’d hated all Daleks and would have had no qualms in slaughtering each and every one of them. Then to see the human qualities portrayed by Omega, she knew that humanity was something living beings had not what they were. She’d seen more humanity and love in one rogue Dalek than she’d seen in a life time of humans.

Jack noticed the double doors up ahead before Louise Ruth and breathed a sigh of relief when the Spiridon opened them with little effort. Gasping for breath Louise Ruth passed from the darkness of the corridor into the light of a sunny Spiridon day. Jack stood in front of her unmoving as she managed to catch up with him. Smiling she noticed Ianto and the others just off to their right. Then following their gaze she looked on in horror as a band of war Daleks turned to face them, their weapons aimed in their direction. One move, she realised and they would all be toast.

Banter came to, amidst shattered concrete and rubble. Standing he realised that with so much dust around he was now partially visible. After painstakingly dusting himself off, he headed in the only direction open to him, which was straight ahead. As he moved, noticed a dead Spiridon appear on the floor, at his feet. It was strange, he thought, not for the first time, how they became visible only when they died. It was as if some higher being was announcing that there had once lived a Spiridon and he should not be forgotten.

Touching his face he realised that it had been Galion, his mother’s brother. He’d liked Galion. He’d treat him like a father since the Daleks invasion and his own father had given his life to save the planet. Shaking off his grief he heard an explosion and the sound of energy weapons discharging up ahead. Nodding at the corpse of his dead uncle he headed off in the direction of the noise. He knew that a sound as loud as that could only be created by the men that had accompanied his sister. There were many off-shoots to the main corridor but he stoically kept to his original course, heading towards the sound of gunfire.

After walking for some time he threw himself against the wall as a group of Daleks came round one corner at speed and headed off in the direction he was travelling. These, he realised, were Daleks like he’d never seen before. Their colour was different and they moved along the corridors with speed and confidence. The old ways, he knew wouldn’t defeat these Daleks. He would have to think of a new way and teach it to the tribe’s young as he had been taught by his uncle.

As the noise up ahead caught the attention of the Daleks he was following. In response, he noticed, they seemed to rise up from the ground and increase their speed. Unable to keep up Banter slowed to a jog and followed at a more manageable pace. After only a few minutes running he noticed that the corridor veered off to the right up ahead. Slowing even more he stopped at the commencement of the corner and peered round. The Daleks that he had been following had stopped and were all facing a single Dalek that, it seemed, had seen better days. He watched as it raised its primary weapon and fired at the four Daleks. Immediately their protective shields came up and the blast bounced off harmlessly.

The head Dalek swivelled its dome and noticed that the damaged Dalek had no eye piece.

‘Stop… firing… we… are… Daleks.’ Realising the futility of the situation the Dalek lowered its weapon. ‘Which… way… did… the… Thals… go?’ The voice of the lead Dalek rang out powerfully in the confines of the corridor.

Now able to examine these new Daleks up closely, he realised that only three of them were painted gold. He had seen the Supreme Dalek, who had similar colouring, once on a hunting trip with his uncle. Tales of its evil deeds had been passed round camp fires throughout Spiridon, but these were something different. The fourth Dalek, and the one that had spoken, was completely black in colour and looked more menacing than any Dalek he had ever encountered. He noticed the dome of the damaged Dalek move back and forth, its eye stork damaged beyond repair. A single light flickered as it spoke.

‘The… Thals… fled… towards… the… hibernation… chambers.’ The lead Dalek’s dome swivelled in that direction then back at the blind Dalek.

‘Intercept… the… Thals… and… exterminate… them.’

‘We… obey,’ came the reply of all three gold Daleks in unison. Without another word they turned right and headed off down the corridor at speed. The lead Dalek turned back towards the damaged one and raised its primary weapon and prepared to fire. Banter saw his chance. As the Dalek prepared to fire he noticed it had dropped its protective shield. Jumping forward he grabbed hold of the primary weapon and twisting removed it from its housing before it could be discharged. To his surprise the injured Dalek threw itself forward and slammed into the black Dalek pinning it to the wall. They were in such close proximity that when the protective shield came up it engulfed all three in their struggle.

‘Help… I… am… under… attack. Help… help.’ The black Dalek screamed in a high pitched mechanical voice as Banter fought to hand on. He struggled under the onslaught of the attack and with great effort managed to open the dome casing of the black Dalek. Since their first invasion his father and uncle had taught him and many others how to sneak up on a Dalek and remove its weaponry and destroy it. Despite their advancements, the hovering and protective shield, he realised, it was still just as easy to defeat them.

After applying all his strength, the dome flipped open, exposing the green slime that was the biological part of the Dalek. Thrusting his hand inside, he took a firm hold of its gelatinous mass and yanked it free of the controls. Throwing it unceremoniously to the floor he lifted his heal and slammed it down on the unprotected life-form. Green blood squelched across the floor covering his foot and making it visible. With a look of disgust he lifted his head and looked down at the second Dalek. He was about to grab hold of its casing when he remembered that it had fought against the Daleks.

‘Who are you and why did you fire at these Daleks?’

The single light on the Dalek’s dome flashed as it spoke. ‘I… am… Omega… friend… of… Louise… Ruth… and… the… Doctor.’ Pulling himself down from the now empty Dalek, Banter looked at the damaged Dalek and nodded. He knew Louise Ruth, she was the woman everyone was looking for and he knew the legend of the Doctor. The Doctor had been his father’s friend and the man that had encased the Daleks in liquid ice the first time. Logically, he thought that would make this Dalek his friend.

A commotion from the corridor the other three Daleks had disappeared down caught his attention. Smiling he patted the blind Dalek on the dome and leaping down from the back of the black Dalek, ran up the corridor he knew lead to the outside.

Jack and Louise Ruth took a step forward, Jack holding both arms in the air. ‘Tell me… what do you want?’

All thirty Daleks turned to face Jack, their weapons coming to bare as they moved. After a moment’s agonising silence a single Dalek moved forward to meet them, stopping when it was only a meter away. Jack, still with his arms raised, gave it his best smile as he braced himself for the blast he knew was coming. It hadn’t been the first time he’d stood in front of a Dalek that was about to kill him and he knew it wouldn’t be the last. Before he could say anything the Dalek continued to move forward and he had to jump to one side to avoid it. Turning he saw, with surprise, that it was Louise Ruth they were interested in not him.

‘Are… you… Louise… Ruth?’ Hesitating at first she nodded, not sure where this was going. If they were going to kill all of them out of hand then why were they being questioned? ‘We… are… the… Daleks… and… we… want… to… play… trains… with… you.’ Jack looked on stunned. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. First a Bible quoting Dalek and now a group that wanted to play games. What was the world coming to when you couldn’t even relay on a Dalek to be evil and want to exterminate, he thought. In unison the remaining twenty nine Daleks, just so there wasn’t any misunderstanding, repeated the words the first Dalek had said then added, ‘We want to be your friend.’ Jack turned to face Louise Ruth who had a hand to her mouth as tears ran freely down her face.

‘Omega’s Human Factor must have worked. They all want to be our friends.’
