Democracy is 51% of the people voting to kill the other 49% (or, given American participation rates, perhaps it's 26% of the population voting to kill the 24% who voted against it and the 50% who didn't vote).
This is pretty much why our Founding Fathers didn't like it. The point of representative democracy is that we have general elections to appoint our bettors to govern us. Direct legislation goes exactly against that and encourages mob rule (although it's funny when the mob is correct and the legislators wrong, like the Prop a few years ago that outlawed affirmative action).
I'm not entirely sure WHY religious institutions are against gay marriage, except maybe in the sense that they're another step in making homosexuality socially acceptable when it's not religiously so. Personally I wish my church would instead spend its money on things that make more of a difference.
