This year I wrote and posted:
32 fics, 17 of which are Drabbles or similarly styled, 6 of which are still Works in Progress, and 29 of which were for my shiny new plaything fandom, Gokaiger (only one of those is a crossover, and it's with RPF of the same fandom). Uh, there's one challenge fic in there for Crossover Big Bang.
Overall Thoughts
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Way more, considering all of last year was an excercise in fanfiction futility (I started several things and finished I think exactly one thing). I also did two fandom jumps this year, one leaving the MCR RPF fandom (for which my muse had long since died) for Power Rangers RPM (around March), and then later in the year properly joining Gokaiger fandom (I started writing fic at the beginning of June).
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Basically all of them, but Gokaiger has to take the cake for this. I was no where near Sentai fandom in January, I was just barely starting to watch Power Rangers RPM in January and not even expecting it to be fandom/fic-worthy.
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Oh Jesus. I'm really happy with
The Jewelry Quartet (plus one), and the first chapter of Shuffling Your Deck of Trick Cards,
Give to Gain is a personal favorite, because I wrote it intending for it to just be a standalone, and it was one of the first Basco fics in the fandom.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I don't know if I would consider anything I wrote particularly risky. Yeah, I wrote some pretty heavy dub-con and tried my best to deal with Stockholm and Lima Syndromes. I don't know if I really learned anything though. Well, I guess I learned that Lima Syndrome even existed...?
From my past year of writing, what was....
My best story of this year:
I have no fucking idea. I guess probably Shuffling Your Deck of Trick Cards. That's the fic that really cemented me as a fairly popular member of the fandom, and I personally think it's much better than it's sequel.
My most popular story of this year:
Based on AO3 Hits,
The Soaring High, The Crushing Down.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
I hate answering this question, because I can't say that a single one of my fics was under-appreciated this year. I have an amazing wonderful support group/fan base/safety net in this fandom. Everyone loves everything I write. I guess my only problem is that somehow the first chapter of Since the Ocean Is Your Coffin has more hits than the lats chapter of Shuffling Your Deck of Trick Cards. Are people really reading that without reading the end of the series before it??
Most fun story to write:
All of my crazy Trope inspired stories (Reverse, The Meaning of Within and now Kill The Party With Me). Kill The Party is fast becoming my favorite potential fic in the new year, because poor Joe. Poor Yuki. Poor everybody.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
This far and away belongs to
I Believe We're the Enemy. I don't care, I wrote this at work and I hated myself for every second if it. Basco fucking Joe while Sid fucks Marvelous and Joe and Marvelous being made to kiss while Basco chokes Joe with his scarf. AND THERE'S MORE. I just love this universe, I need to write more of it.
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
HAH. There is nothing that's wrong, even for me. Sorry, everybody, I'm a terrible kinky person, I am not even phased by the dub/non-con in the early parts of Shuffling Your Deck of Trick Cards. And it didn't seem to bother anyone else, either. I never got around to writing any of my dark Kaijin!Basco/everybody fic(s).
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
I've always known exactly what my Joe was like, and he just solidified that as I started to write more and more of him (poor codependent boy that he is). I think my first time dealing with truly sympathetic Basco was in The Soaring High, The Crushing Down and I explored a bit more of that aspect of Basco in A Flower In A Field of Weeds. That was different, and amazing, and very fun to write.
Hardest story to write:
I didn't have a really hard time with any of my fic this year, which I guess goes to show what this fandom has done to me. However, it's important to note that I do have 6 Works in Progress, some of which haven't been updated since July and August.
Biggest Disappointment:
I'm not particualarly disappointed with anything I wrote this year. I only signed up for one challenge and I completed it successfully, although I left the fandom(s) before the posting date, oops. I did still post the fic and it was well received! I guess I'm disappointed that I didn't finish enough of my WIPs before starting new fic. BAD TREY. NO COOKIE.
Biggest Surprise:
I just recently had someone posting a fic to AO3 that they requested to be linked back to The Soaring High, The Crushing Down as inspiration. That was a day after I got an Anon message on Tumblr telling me that they had just started writing fic again due in no small part to the influence of my fic. I guess my biggest surprise is just generally that my crazy Alternate Universe concepts, my 'what-ifs' and my 're-castings' and everything, they're really popular in Gokaiger fandom, where they were mostly ignored in MCR RPF. So that's something.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
There's some telling moments in both Shuffling Your Deck of Trick Cards and Since the Ocean Is Your Coffin, mostly dealing with the fact that Joe's codependency issues are based in no small part on myself. Oops.
Favorite Opening Line(s):
By the time a generally accepted Galactic night had fallen (generally accepted because it was of course technically always night in space), Marvelous knew a few things about his new comrade and crew mate.
From
Wounded and Wishing To Fall Favorite Closing Line(s): (this is hard, because I have so many works in progress)
He held the memory of Basco; his old friend, his ex-crew mate, his once enemy, and in the end a man who had given his very life to protect the heart of the man he'd grown to love. And he swore to honor it.
It was exactly what a pirate should do.
From
Unconditional, the final chapter of Since the Ocean Is Our Coffin.
Favorite 5 Line(s) from Anywhere:
"What happened to you?" Marvelous asked bluntly.
"What do you mean?" Joe gulped. "What is it?"
"Joe..." Luka said carefully, as if searching for the right words.
"You're a lady!" Don blurted out.
Joe had always prided himself in his constitution; his tolerance for pain and his ability to deal with curious, strange or dangerous situations.
He promptly passed out.
and also
As for shirts, he ended up in a number of Marvelous' finer button-downs, only buttoned part-way up. Joe thought it was particularly inappropriate and maybe even bordering on obscene, but Marvelous was adamant that "there's nothing wrong with showing a little skin" and "so long as your nipples aren't hanging out you'll be fine".
Both from
Reverse Top 5 Scenes from Anywhere You Would Choose to Have Illustrated: (another hard one to answer, since I actually do have an awesome fanartist friend in this fandom who has drawn a bunch of my crack)
1. Joe sucking Marvelous off while each boy is fucked by his alternate mentor from I Believe We're The Enemy
2. Double Joe hating on each other from The Meaning of Within
3. Female!Joe, in Don's khaki pants and Marvelous' red-and-black striped shirt from Reverse
4. Gai and his AU Sentai team from It's A Marvelous Life
5. Refugee Don and Ahim, also from It's A Marvelous Life
Fic-writing goals for 2011:
1. Finish The Soaring High, The Crushing Down, Reverse and The Meaning of Within.
2. Co-write something with Simon finally (probably Gokaiger/Ocarina of Time crossover).
3. Write another magnum opus for the fandom, lol. I have so many little posible scenes for a serious Joe character study. I need to just buckle down and write it.
4. Just keep writing, maybe do a challenge or two (I know sign-ups for hurt/comfort big bang haven't closed yet...)
