Ok so watched Insurrection last night whilst a bit drunk....
And whilst in really enjoyed it, in fact it's one of my favorite trek films, However. It's also the Trek film that pisses me off the most, and almost matches Enterprise in the disdain in which I hold it.
Quite the pickle? I'll explain.............
First off we must consider the time period in which the film is set, namley during the Dominion War. Now to my mind the Dominion War is THE most important event to happen in the trek universe since the Khitomer Accord. No major event depicted in TNG, Voyager or even TOS comes close to how significant the Dominion War is in shaping the trek universe. First contact with the Borg comes close but no cigar.
The film even makes several refferences to the Dominion War so it's not like we can suspend our disbelief that this EARTH SHATTERING, (quite literally in the Breen's assault on Earth's case) event is taking place in the same time frame that this film is set.
And what is the Enterprise, (the flagship of the fleet mind) doing at this crucial moment in history?
PISSING ABOUT ON A DIPLOMATIC MISSION!
And what does Starfleet have one of it's Vice Admirals doing during one of the biggest millitary operations in their history?
WORKING WITH A RACE WHO HELP MANUFACTURE KETRACEL WHITE.
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
It's also the way in which the film shits on DS9 continuity. Specificly the charcter of Worf.
I really like how Worf ends up in First Contact, makes sense, I'm cool with that.
Nemesis I can live with also, though as to why he's back in Starfleet who knows.
But his introduction in Insurrection fucks me off no end here's how it happens:
Picard is walking down a corridor on his way to make first contact with an alien race.
On his way guess who he sees, Its Worf!
PICARD-Well hello Mr Worf, what are you doing here?
WORF-I'm here because.................
And then it cuts away to another converstaion!!!
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
And then, when the Enterprise goes to collect Data, (more on him later......) Picard has a throw away line which roughly equates to:
PICARD: Delay Mr Worf's depature to DS9 so he can come with us.
WHY?
So let's get this straight. Picard is going to deny DS9, which is on the frontline of a fucking WAR, one of it's best officers because Picard would like to have him around to pick up Data.
Again. WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Ok now for a run down of other problems I have with the film:
Joystick. Wesley Crusher could have pulled off that manouver with out using a fucking joystick.
Picard in love. Picard loves Crusher, no other Period.
Shit bad guys. Son'a or Borg. No contest.
Admiral Dougherty. Just plain creepy looking.
HMS fucking Pinafore. Though Worf singing is as amusing as ever.
Data trying to learn to have fun. Yes we get it he wants to be more human. We know this because it was a major plot point in Generations. And Frist Contact. And seven seasons.
For crying out loud, Crusher and LaForge are right there in the background begging to be allowed to do something usefull. At least the cat's not there, hell that would have got more screentime than Beverly did.
Enterprise E. Surley the beautifullest, sexiest ship ever, ever, ever. Comes across as a bit shit in this film though, gets ran ragged by Son'a ships and not a lot else. Sigh.
Actually thinking about it I hate this film. What was I thinking when I said I liked it?
Temporary bout of madness I say.
Oh well, going to watch First Contact now. Remind myself of how it should be done.
