*taking his breakfast when suddenly a grey owl swoops down and drops a letter next to his plate*

My darling son,

How are you? I'm fine, though winter seems particularly long and harsh here. I'm feeling quite lonely, despite the frequent visits I've been getting from your aunt. This terrible weather only reminds of how far away summer is, and the day when I will see you again. I was very pleased with your last mark in Astronomy, but I don't recall if you told me what your classmates' grades were.  I hope that this is a sign that you have a good chance of becoming Head Boy next year - this could be your big chance to start a brilliant career in the Ministry. I'm confident that you will get top marks on your exams, and I can't tell you how proud it would make me. Don't forget to study hard, dear, even though I know boys your age may have other interests which lead them astray. Your hard work will pay off soon, gracing our family with the honour your father was so quick to deny us.

All my thoughts are with you, as my heart. Please owl back soon!

Your loving mother

*folds the letter back and purses his lips, turning back to his bacon with a sullen look on his face*
