My heart leaps into my throat every time I see the terrifying video or photos of the massive fires in southern California. What a horrific tragedy this has become. I am very glad that so many LJers have been reporting in to say they're OK. And I hope they and their homes stay safe.

This morning, a national news team was reporting from the county fairgrounds where many horses as well as dogs, llamas and goats are being housed. I thought of you during the segment.

Yep, my boss asked "Does this mean I'm sending you into the middle of an inferno?" That wasn't quite true (the airport was never threatened, and I spent the time on Coronado Island, also not threatened). But you could *see* and *smell* the fires and the ash and the smoke. I haven't experience that in *ages*, since we had the really bad fires in LA back when I lived out there.
We were told not to go outside unless absolutely necessary (due to the poor air quality) and there was no such things as views due to the smoke haze. But compared to the 960,000+ people who were evacuated from their homes, and had no idea if they'd have homes to go home to, we had NOTHING to complain about.
Scary stuff, indeed. Glad to see pennquelle checked in! I was sad that I wasn't able to meet with shirebound, whose work was messed up due to the fires.

It *was* bizarre seeing the fires as I flew in.
What luck, oi! 99.99% of the time, San Diego is a gorgeous place to be. My luck...
