To do so would require a meteor to incinerate my controller so that I could be trounced on just the same level.

Hey, it wouldn't require that much. Maybe a small itervening force, such as your sister grapping your controller while you were playing. That would do it i think, no need for a meteor. But i think your way would work too, although it would be more unlikely than mine.
