Yes, that's it! There's an immediacy and a tension there now that there wasn't there before, and a character that we can start to identify with. It's a good opening - leaves the reader wanting to know more.

it may just be my love for Roger Zelazny, but I'm a sucker for immortal protagonists. Nice opening, and it does grab the attention. I want to know more about the girl on the wooden bench, and more about the price the queen paid to survive the plague. Nice going.

On the mechanics of writing, Jack Woodford, who was wiser and richer than ye or me (check out the article on him on wikipedia) recommended writing every day. He wrote 5,000 words, but said that if you couldn't write 5,000 write 3,000 or 2,000 or a 1,000. And that if you couldn't write a thousand words a day, insurance offered many great career opportunities. Cynical old sod.

Writing a 1000 words a day is a nice idea if you haven't got a full time job, house to keep, cat and other half to feed and whatever other nonsense you may have going on. I haven't touched this since I wrote it the other night! Still, really glad you like it though :-)

yes, it's one of the reasons I decided I wasn't going to write for a while - I write around 1000 words an hour, which is quite fast, and when I couldn't find an hour to do that I realised I wasn't taking it seriously enough.

It is really difficult to find the time. By time I get in and get everything done that needs doing, and eaten, it's getting on for 9ish and I'm knackered...I'm toying with the idea of taking a couple of days off at some point, making a long weekend of it and just having a bash at getting a couple of chapters out. That's probably a dream though.
