For future reference ... DiskGetor is an AWESOME data recovery program (www.diskgetor.com). They had a trial you can download and then run to see what it can recover, then it's $69 that you have to pay to actually recover the data. I had a MAJOR computer crash this summer that affected both of my hard drives and this program recovered EVERYTHING!!! (except that which I had encrypted ... so, if you have any encrypted data, be sure to save the key somewhere so you can recover it if you have another crash ... the Windows website has the instructions on how to do this). Also, the program can recover data from a reformatted drive. It totally saved my butt! :)
Awesome, thanks! I'll definitely keep that in mind. :D Something like that would be super helpful if I make a mistake and reformat the wrong drive. (I did that once, a long time ago. It was sad.)
This time my hard drive was basically fine, but the virus had corrupted some Windows system files. I was able to replace the broken ones from a backup, so it's working again, but apparently the infection is some kind of nasty backdoor trojan and everything I read about it suggests that it's nearly impossible to tell if the machine is still compromised in some way.
All of my personal data should be backed up now; I just need to give it another once-over before I reformat and reinstall Windows.
