[The voice is a woman's, melodic, deep and powerful. This is someone who led a crusade that reshaped the social structure of the known universe for thousands of years. It is a leader's voice, capable of starting and stopping wars. So not all that different from Leto. After all, she is his ancestor. [There's a soft click as the voice comes on. Duo's eyes are kind of glassy as the journal's slowly repeating Leto's entry in the background.]

Blah blah blah, ya know, you sound just like a chick now? Seriously. And ya talk too much. You need ta learn ta paraphrase or somethin'. Wait, what?

[There's some movement and the entry backs up a bit and Leto's can hear his ancestor's voice again right before Duo starts laughing very, very loudly.] Oh shit, man, this shouldn't be funny. Oh hell, really shouldn't be funny, but I feel like I need ta explain sex to ya!

An aspect of my condition. I don't know if I am in full control of myself.

How, precisely, does one define 'the shape of the human mind'?

[Butler's voice]

A consciousness capable of self reflection.

It could be argued that the fault lay not with the creation of the machines in question but the use to which they were put. There is more than one use for a machine after all, and torture is hardly one most people would condone.

[His own]

Humans have instinctual drives that limit their interactions with their environment. Humans are capable of not destroying their environment. They are capable of restraint.
Thinking Machines are endowed with the analytical powers of consciousness but none of its restraints. They must expand to fill every ecological niche.

[Butler's]

That is not the point! The point is the...abomination...

Just because you were a hero, does not mean you can try to hijack me like that! I...[He realizes it's still on. Click.]

So, basically, you were unable to keep a hold of the things you created? It would seem that it was your own fault. I am not interested in a pathetic sob story when your kind failed to do assert your rule.

Tell someone who cares.

Do not judge until you have fought them.

My family has been fighting a war for one hundred years. I have heard more puppy tear filled eyed stories that actually matter. It seems to me it is your own fault for being unable to control what you created.

It seems to me as if you deserved it. So perhaps you should keep it to yourself. From what I can tell, your... what did you say? Decadent is in enough trouble as it is. Not that I care, but if it gets rid of one annoying person I don't mind.

[Butler's.]

But you have not fought the thinking machines. Their rise was not my fault, but that of the decadence of the old empire.

I don't care about the history of your world. What happened to you is awful, but the rules of your world don't apply here!

This rule is absolute. We must not allow a second resurgence in this other world either.
