Glad it went well and you feel better about it. Yes, you need to get him more experiences and exposure, and if putting a muzzle on is necessary then get him used to it.
Simon has never been aggressive or threatening, but I used a "Gentle Leader" on him for a while. It looks like a very simple muzzle, but is more of a head collar or bridle. The added strap across a dog's nose seems to calm some of them and remind them that they aren't in charge. Supposed to simulate the way an alpha will close his muzzle over a subordinate's nose, I guess. Anyway, it helped with Simon when he was young and very jumpy and excited. Now he's much more "ho-hum" about things but he turned 12 years old last month.
