When you get the new sump pump, try attaching it to a marine battery, just in case a rainstorm causes you to lose power.
As far as the documents: If they are really soggy, they will turn to pulp and no one will be able to flip through them anyway. But if you aren't confident that they've been destroyed, then shredding companies have processes to destroy wet documents, too. If it's just a few, you can spread them out and dry them, then shred or burn them.
I think we are going to see if we can shred them after they dry. I'm hoping that we can shred them, or maybe the restoration company will have a way to destroy them. I'll be so happy when this is all over.
My husband (MacGuyver) suggests careful oven roasting to dry them, or putting them in a cloth bag in a dryer, or leaving them in a hot car.
If you use the oven, watch the heat so it doesn't catch fire. Paper doesn't ignite until 450, but ovens do develop hot spots. A dryer only goes up to about 185.
Right now we have it air drying. Thanks for the suggestions. We are trying to not use a lot of power because of the fans and dehumidifiers drying the basement. Yesterday fuses kept going out, so we don't want to risk it. We really miss dad with all this mess.
I think I might be glad to go to work with the restoration people and the plumber for the new pump will be here.
