Isn't that cool? I had a similar experience in Vancouver. Horseback riding and watching tons of eagles soar and drink from the river and rest on rocks and in trees. Gorgeous.
there is a woman, a minnesota ex-pat, who lives in alaska and feeds the birds during the coldest of the winter months. she does it all on her own, with no physical contact with the eagles, and she depends on her own salary and donations to do it. they respect her, and come to her acreage when they get hungry during the worst of the winter. there are incredible pictures of her and the birds online. i believe someone finally published a photoessay about her. and many/most of the most delicious eagle pictures in publications come from photographers who sit in a blind, there, observing.
it just blows me away. and i love that the population of them in mn has grown so in the last decade or so. they used to be such a rare sight, here--now, one can almost count on seeing one if there's a river or lake nearby.
these photos are fabulous! now i want to go to alaska even moreso!
there was a woman in eagle river who was feeding the eagles, but was convinced to quit when the huge groups gathering there were becoming a nuisance, and were in danger...
