why do (older) video games have a BGM/sound test feature(s)? what's the point? did anyone legitimately care?

i don't think i've ever had a point in my life where i thought "whoa, i really, really need a sound effect of dhalsim going 'yoga flame' or sagat going 'tiger knee' right now!!!" and run off and put my sf2 cartridge into the snes. i mean ( Read more... )

On some games you had to unlock it (Ninja Gaiden 2 / Sonic 1), and I would sit there and listen to the tunes happily. Since I didn't have the equipment to record the audio to cassette tape this was my only option.

just noticed that newly re-re-r-ere-r-re released Namco games on PS3 have the option. i mean really, who's going to listen to the soundtrack of Galaga or Dig Dug?! okay well the Pac Man theme is pretty catchy but really.
