I wonder if we could detect Earth-like planets by coming up with a way of measuring the effect tidal oceans' tides have on surrounding stellar bodies..

i thought it was the other way around, though.

like the moon affects our tides, not the tide affects the moon.

am i wrong in that line of thinking?

Everything effects everything else, is all. Liquid oceans would have a different effect, I think, because they'd be oscillating.
