I liked this episode best for the character development and how Sam and Dean are kind of shifting and re-settling after their Dad's death. It's not being forgotten, and I hope it won't be anytime soon. The A plot with the clown wasn't really anything to write home about.

I mean, Dean not hitting on a woman as hot as Jo? Who can throw a punch? That's noteable. And Sam's re-orientation re: John -- There's serious fallout, and the clown parts were just the backdrop to explore these issues.

Also, I cringed for the car.

And not just not hitting on her, but backing off when she hit on *him.* (We'd better see her again, though. She was cool, if only onscreen for two minutes.)

And yeah...the Sam-as-good-son thing was pretty good because it was so...weird. I liked the confrontation at the end, where Sam admitted that he was fucked up--but so is Dean.

I was thinking about the car thing, and i remembered that John gave Dean the car--there's a line about it in "Dead Man's Blood" (something like "i wouldn't have given you that car if i didn't think you were going to take care of it"), so i wonder if beating on the car is a way to take out his anger at his dad about whatever it is he knows about Sam.

I think i like this episode best if seen as "fallout plus throwaway plot." The clown plot was, as you said, eh.

Can we talk about how awesome Ash is? Mr. MIT-with-a-mullet? I hope that bar works to serve as something of a home base for the boys, so we can get some character development from other recurring characters now that dad's gone.

Plus, they need to go visit the cute brunette art-gallery gal Sam was clicking with. Let the serial-ness build up a bit like it did in Buffy, without losing the road-trip appeal and narrative freedom it gives. I figure one more episode before the car is up and running, to get a bit more with Jo, Ash and Ellen, then a road-trip episode or two before Ash picks up the demon's trail.

It'll be interesting to see if the car comes to bear Dad-ness to Dean, given what you said about him giving the car.

I hope they don't start finding themselves strapped for monster plots. I wouldn't be too afraid with Edlund on board, but they do still need some of the variety it gives.

Plus, it makes me want to play Hunter or nWoD mortals or something.

EDLUND!!1 Squee!1 (;

Ash was awesome. One of the things i neglected to mention here is how much i love the fact that the hunters are all normal Midwestern folks--junkyard guys and bar owners and preachers and ex-Marines. It makes me very happy that they're not all gothy or spooky or whatever--they're very matter of fact, regular joes and janes, which makes it almost scarier at times.

And yeah...Sarah (art-auctioneer chick) totally needs to come back. She was great.

Dude...a Supernatural game would be badass...
