I'd heard rumors about this, but nothing concrete until now. I have no doubts that Sr. del Toro will do this thing justice (and fully appreciate his intentions to develop the characters way more, although a more detatched, documentary-like take could be really interesting if done right.) The inevitable insurge of bandwagon-type fans will be ( Read more... )

On the other hand, this may finally convince me to jump ON the bandwagon--oh, Guillermo del Toro, how I love your twisted and obviously Lovecraft-influenced mind. (I showed you Hellboy, right? Those darn squid gods ...)

I just have such a hard time taking Cthulhu seriously. But I know you like it, so I may go down to the local used bookstore and pick up one of them.

Yeah, you showed me Hellboy. It was fun. gondolinchick01 January 30 2008, 19:53:06 UTC
IMHO, half the fun of reading Lovecraft is not taking it seriously. The guy writes like a particularly macabre Tolkien on crack which leads to hugely long bouts of purple prose and descriptions like "the Crawling Chaos Nyarlathotep, tenebrous and eldritch monstrosity from beyond the cryptic waste of frozen death.*" And anyway, it's not like the mythos is limited to Cthulhu himself. I admit that I have a hard time taking most of the Outer Gods/Great Old Ones seriously myself, but they're still a lot of fun to read about. (And if you're looking for something actually scary, I recommend Dreams in the Witch House or The Hound.)

*A fictitious but completely typical example.

The Colour out of Space is one like that. I mean the dialogue is so ridiculous and most of the events are just silly (especially the ending) but, all the same, there's something intensely creepy about it! That and Innsmouth will, I think, be etched in my memory forever :)

Incidentally, apparently most of Lovecraft is banned in Australia too. Apparently.

oh sweet. I just hope it's not... ya know, ruined. Hollywoodised or dumbed down or censored or changed so much that it isn't Lovecraft anymore.

Have you read Shadow Over Innsmouth? My favourite so far :)

BTW, your icon is loltastic :)

I really enjoyed The Shadow over Innsmouth although the ending struck me as slightly anticlimactic. (And thank you. Cat macros, Wodehouse, Fry and Laurie are all wonderful things but combining them just makes it all the better.)
