In response to city_of_dis's e-mail forward from his father

I am dumbfounded that something like this is circulating, and the fact that people are so bound by a religious outlook which requires one to check their brain at the door. Pretty much every attack listed has had some sort of political motivation. Also, the average Muslim looks at what these "Male Muslims" have been doing and are utterly disgusted. ( Read more... )

It's sad, really. And I don't recall reading that in Revelations.

neither do I, but people will fixate on whatever misinformation reinforces whatever whacky version of reality they choose to believe. I think someone else said it best, in Not voting for McCain because he used to be a woman, and that is as relevant and valid as someone saying that someone will not vote for Obama because he is Muslim.

"I just feel like if there is anything which needs to be fundamentally fixed is the education system. Rural schools have comparable lack of academic achievement to inner city schools. If you have that kind of rampant ignorance, it is no wonder most republicans are thinking what they are about Obama."

If you want to fix this ignorance you shouldn't start with rural vs city school. you should stop Homeschooling. Most of the time homeschooling is done because parents don't agree with values that the school are teaching and let's face it, most of the time parents think school are too liberal (there probably are a few case of the opposite) After that fix the discrepancy. As it stand if you try to teach smart thinking like this the parents might just say they are home schooling and keep on preaching hatred.

*I'm not trying to bash homeschooling because I know some wonderful people who was homeschooled, but i'm saying that a lot of time closeminded parents use homeschool to prevent their kids from learning things like evolution*

Getting people to not home school would be a "nit-picky" part of fixing something on a broader base level. I understand what you mean though, as hate does not grow in a vacuum. I also can comprehend that not all homeschooling is bad, but It's like trying to fix a hole in a dam when the dam is already crumbling.. Where do you even begin?

*sigh* And I just found out that my Obama-friendly sister forgot to register to vote. Christ, I'm so disappointed in my family right now.

wow, that's f'ed up. can you imagine a laundry list of all of the acts of violence by "Christian male extremists"?

You know they would never own up to being called extremists. Nor would they admit that their "acts of violence" were more than anything politically motivated, rather than the "greater good" they purport to endorse.

You need to tell your friend to do a quick fact check on those ridiculous bullet points in that fwd. Some of them are deliberately falsified info. Another thing to do would be to compile a list of GOOD things muslims have done in/for this country, because that list is equally long, if not longer.

What an awkward situation that conversation is going to be. City_of_dis just needs to remember that he wont, in all likelihood change his father's mind, but he can convey his response and what he thinks about his father's opinion succinctly and respectfully...so that hopefully it'll encourage this wayward parent to think a little more.
