need new truck tires - anyone have a recommendation?

Apr 09, 2006 21:07

One of the tires on my truck got shredded today. I've had the truck for 31,000 miles and it now has 118,000 miles. I'm assuming this set has lived a useful life, and I'm going to replace the set.

I have a Dodge Ram 1500, rear-wheel drive. Anyone have a recommendation?

Your buddy Chris is getting new tires on Wednesday. You should give him a call and see what's up. :)

Chris is going to Costco. A good set of Michelins are costing $600 there. He's had an unbalanced set for a while now, which makes the truck a bear to drive.

I'm not sure the style or anything. Chris said that Costco has a restriction about how large the tires can legally be (i.e., they won't do tires more than 5% bigger than factory), so his will be smaller. I don't know that this will affect you, though, because I don't think you have super-large tires on there anyway.

The only other place I could recommend is Downtown Auto, which is the place Chris always takes the truck to. They're trustworthy and priced fairly. I don't know if they do tires (they don't do a/c, for instance), but it's worth calling.

I'll let Chris know that you're looking for tires.

We already exchanged e-mail last night, thanks.

The super-wide tires were already on the truck when I bought it. I'm not wedded to those tires. I think I'll find out what Fletcher can do for me on a price of Michelins (since the truck is at their place right now), and if I can't get under $750, then I'll inflate the spare and get the truck to Costco this week. (My folks have a membership even though I don't.)

Downtown is where I've been taking my truck ever since I got it, and they've always done great work for me for a great price. But they're not tire people, so they'll have to order the tires and add markup. FYI, they will do A/C work if all that is required is getting a dead rat out of the system!

I highly recommend you buy them at Discount Tire.

There are several categories of tire to choose from. The broad category for you is Light Truck. The subcategory you want is Highway All-Season.

I recommend one of the following tires:

Michelin Cross Terrain SUV

Yokohama Geolandar HT/S

Goodyear Fortera Silent Armor

These are all excellent Highway All-Season tires in the Light Truck class. The Yokohamas are probably the least expensive of the three.

Read reviews on TireRack.com, but buy at Discount Tire. Their customer service is phenomenal, prices low, and they give free balancing for the life of the tire (as does Costco I believe).
