Summary: When Death visits time starts to tick faster towards the end of his own existence.
This wasn't how it was suppose to end.
With the rain pounding harshly against pale fragile skin that was marbled with splatters of crimson, Kyungsoo laid on the cold pavement as he tried to force his lungs to breathe. No matter how many gasping breaths he would inhale, every single breath would cause more blood to fill his lungs and escape from his pale lips. With the blood feeling like broken glass as it seeped out of his broken body, Kyungsoo could only lie there as the pain continued to smoother him. This is what death felt like, this was what the end of his existence was going to be like. Alone, dark, and painful. It wasn't fair.
There wasn't a single reason for why Kyungsoo should have died today but when did death really allow you to know when your end was nearing? It was inevitable and always would occur without your knowledge in most cases. It didn't matter how wealthy or famous you were. If it was your time then death would be awaiting you with its arms wide open.
With a pain filled mind, Kyungsoo tried to reason what had happened. Perhaps it was the blood loss or maybe the shock from having his bones crushed by the impact of the car, but every memory was crystal clear. All thoughts were easy to recall although the fact was that Kyungsoo couldn't even move a single muscle in his body. He could only think as he slowly faded away. Oh the things that he would have done differently if he had that knowledge that today would be his last night on this earth.
The day had begun just like every other one. With the sun high in the sky, Kyungsoo's life wasn't remarkable. He lived in a simple studio apartment with his pet, a Siamese cat named Bomi. She was the spring of his life and Kyungsoo couldn't deny that he loved to prepare home made cat food for his little feline. It was normal, simple, and plain life but he never complained. He's had the same friends ever since middle school, never really stepping out of his comfort level.
Nothing ever seemed to change ever for Kyungsoo, not even his routine. He had a great group of friends that he would spend hours hanging out with, listening to them bicker and argue with each other in friendly competition. He was a top student as the local university, working hard in the culinary classes that his major required. Although he only had one more semester left before he would graduate, it didn't stop Kyungsoo from attending his classes diligently and never skipping out.
Just like today, Kyungsoo planned on attending his evening class without a second thought. Most students preferred to take classes during the daytime so that they could enjoy their evenings, but with more free time at night than during the day, Kyungsoo didn't mind the late night classes. They were relaxing for him, letting himself learn with his body and mind fully awake. It seemed like a typical evening, except one little thing. Luhan. His friend.
As Luhan waved goodbye after finishing his last class, Kyungsoo could remember that Luhan asked if he wanted to miss his class and attend karaoke instead. It was such a simple question, so easy to respond to. Just like Luhan said, “Missing one night of class wouldn't kill you.” Oh, how true that was. Kyungsoo should have taken his offer. After all, if Kyungsoo knew that he would be killed right after the class, maybe, just maybe he would have skipped class for once.
But, Kyungsoo didn't take the offer. He allowed his friend to leave without him and Kyungsoo allowed his own demise to come to him. The class was typical, exciting if he dare admitted. In it, he enjoyed learning how to make Roasted Eggplant with Yogurt Sauce. With the class over and his stomach nice and full, Kyungsoo left and headed home. That was when things changed dramatically.
Crossing the dim lit street, Kyungsoo didn't see the car coming down the road too fast. With it's head lights off and speeding faster than it should have, no one could have know it was coming. It was already dark outside, the faint lights of the street lamps being the only thing to illuminate the darkness. Kyungsoo couldn't really remember anything other than the impact of the harsh steel against his body. His body twisted from the impact, his backpack flying off and landing feet away from his body as it's papers littered the street. With the car slamming on it's breaks for a moment, Kyungsoo lied there in agony. He could only watch as it quickly speed off leaving him twisted on the pavement, his right leg bent at an angle that wasn't humanly possible, as his own blood seeped around his body. With no one around to see the accident, Kyungsoo knew that it was the end. He was gone, he would die alone.
Kyungsoo wasn't sure if it was minutes or hours passing, but the world slowly began to get darker. Everything was harder to focus on and he wanted nothing more than to be in someone's warm embraces. If he could have someone weeping for him, someone that would miss him, it would make this much easier. It was true that his friends would cry and morn his loss, but they would forget about him with time. Their hearts would heal with the passage of time. Yet, for someone that is in love, the time wouldn't ever heal the wounds. You would remain imprinted in their hearts and memory, a type of immortality that people dream of. Yet, Kyungsoo wouldn't have it.
Letting his eyes close, Kyungsoo could feel that the blood was becoming to think within him. It was too hard to breath, it hurt too much to struggle to stay alive, Kyungsoo didn't want to die but it wasn't his choice any longer. As the world grew dark a strange touch seemed to awaken his mind. The warm feeling of a smooth finger grazed over his cheek, a deep voice sung a hauntingly beautiful song beside him.
“I'll fix your feet til you cant walk.
I'll lock your jaw til you cant talk.
I'll close your eyes so you can't see.
This very air, come and go with me.
I'm death I come to take the soul.”
There was a sadness in that voice that Kyungsoo couldn't deny. Was this death singing his final song for him? Was it really time for Kyungsoo to leave this world, leave the people he cared about and treasured. Kyungsoo wasn't ready for it, he didn't want to no longer exist and become a memory that people would forget.
It took all of his willpower to open his eyes. There were no words to describe the pain he felt with a small action such as that. It was more than painful, the feeling of glass digging into his corneas would be pretty close. With his eyes unfocused from the hints of red blood that was filling them, Kyungsoo could see a figure leaning over him. He didn't look like what Kyungsoo imagined death to be. In fact, he looked like a typical human. With a slightly olive complexion, hair and eyes that were as dark as the night, Kyungsoo couldn't deny that death was handsome. That unearthly beauty seemed to be magnified the more that he gazed on death. He was so handsome that Kyungsoo wondered if letting himself die by his hands wouldn't be so bad. Yet, that beauty seemed to be ever changing as Kyungsoo simply stared at death in the eyes. For brief moments, Kyungsoo could have sworn that death was nearly crumbing apart in front of him. The flawless olive skin seemed to be laced with dark cracks and crevasses, as if the humanity that he was seeing was just an illusion that death was giving to the poor human who was dying within his grasp.
“It's time, are you ready?” Death questioned, his dark eyes looking at Kyungsoo with pity that he couldn't understand. With the way that death slowly cradled Kyungsoo's body tightly against his chest, finger's grazing over the blood smeared flesh, Kyungsoo found himself afraid. Was this really the end, he wasn't ready for this. He wasn't ready to leave, not yet.
“Death, won't you spare me. Even if it's for another year. I'm not ready.” Kyungsoo's voice cracked as begged, the words coming out in a whisper as his throat seemed to be raw and painful. It hurt just to talk but Kyungsoo couldn't let himself fade away without a fight.
There was a puzzling expression on the face of death, a look of confusion and surprise that Kyungsoo never would have expected to see on the others face. The air was quiet as the two sat there in silence, only the soft coughs and wheezing of Kyungsoo's lungs giving out would break the silence.
To his surprise, Kyungsoo heard death speak. “Spare you? I will spare you for another year under one condition, within this year I want you to teach me about what it means to live. When that year ends I'll take your soul and you'll die. That is my offer.”
It wasn't something that Kyungsoo could really barter or haggle with. The only request that death wanted was to be shown what being alive meant. If he did that then he would be allowed to live for another year, a year that he could fix things and say good bye correctly. Maybe it was because of his fear of dying, but Kyungsoo forced himself to speak. “I agree, please don't let me die.”
With those words a pair of warm lips crashed on top of his own. Fear and panic filled Kyungsoo as he tried to struggle, fearing that this was the kiss of death and that the words weren't enough to convince death to let him know. But, as he felt the other man slowly part his lips with his own as he felt his body suddenly began to grow warm. Everything didn't seem to hurt as much any longer. He felt light and unable to stay conscious any longer. Death spoke softly in that same haunting voice before Kyungsoo lost consciousness.
“Our deal is marked, no wealth or plea will change this deal. After a years time, you will pass away. Till then, sleep well Kyungsoo. For tomorrow starts the first day of our deal.”
