I agree that it was the best in the series. I think it really got into the ugliness of war, the good guys aren't always good and the bad guys aren't always the ones doing the most horrific things.

Since I was a Peeta fan, I was pleased they ended up together though I saw pretty early she wasn't going to end with Gale. His move towards weapon development and war strategy seemed to really turn her off. For the better part of the last half of the book , I thought she was going to either end up alone or dead.

Her other series has very much the same message and theme, so I shouldn't have been surprised by the bleakness but that one was slightly lighter because the protag was only 12 or 13. It's a great series though with a lot of similarities to THG.

Gale became my favorite in the end. And I actually am kind of glad he didn't get exiled to District 12 to be in mourning his whole life. It was such a heartbreaking end for Katniss. I feel like in some ways she did end up alone, even though she was with Peeta and they had the kids, because her tone was so detatched and fearful and just...tired. Sigh.

Dude! Duuuude! What about the line "I knew you'd kiss me." "Why?" "Because I'm in pain. That's the only way I get your attention."

My brain IMMEDIATELY went to "You're fine with the dead guys. It's the living ones you can't deal with."

Right??? Katniss was so Kara for me, in this book. Like "Finally, he can see me for who I really am. Violent. Distrustful. Manipulative. Deadly." At that moment I thought to myself--whoa, reading Katniss' narrative is like taking a tour through Kara's head.

Finally finished the book. I agree with your initial assessment that it was very dark. It went places that I didn't think it would, but made sense once they got there. Was hoping that Cinna wasn't really dead, but at least we got mentions of him in this book. Totally shocked by Prim's death. And Katniss killing Coin, but since she seemed like the one who had put things in place for Prim to die...makes sense really. Not sure how I feel about Peeta/Katniss. For a while I was thinking that Peeta was just lost, so ending up with Gale would just happen, but that isn't what happened. Once Katniss confronted Gale about the bomb design, I knew where things would go. Kind of. The idea of doing a Hunger Games with the Capitol children - I was shocked that would even come up. All in all, I think it ended as good for Katniss as could have been expected. I liked it a lot and am still formulating my thoughts about it since I just finished it last night.
