CHARACTER PERSONALITY: Gwen Cooper is, basically, the heart of Torchwood. She cares about people, even people she’s never met. She doesn’t let “doing the job” get in the way of “helping people” if she can help it, and she will argue passionately with Jack in favor of doing something more risky and complicated to help someone rather than do the simple thing that will deal with the problem but potentially hurt or kill or just generally not help someone. She is stubborn, and is not content to drop things just because she’s been told to do so, or that they’re “handled”.
Gwen became a policewoman, and ended up joining Torchwood, because she wants to help people, to save people. It’s not important that they know, but it is important that she try her best. This extends to her team as well - she is the “mama lion” of Torchwood. While she might not always get along with her team, if they’re hurt in any way (physically or emotionally), she will move heaven and earth to make the person who hurt them pay for it, or to fix whatever the situation is.
Gwen is good in a crisis, generally able to keep a cool head until the immediate danger has passed. She’s less able to handle emotional crises level-headedly, though she always does her best to help, but sometimes it ends with a lot of shouting and tears. Still, she’s a good person to have on your side, because she will put her stubbornness to work if anyone she cares about needs it. She is loyal, a very poor liar, and doesn’t like keeping secrets - partially because she’s rather bad at it, even having worked for a secret organization as long as she has. Work stuff is different than just “secrets”, to her.
Right now, Gwen is going through a lot of “rough time”. A few months ago, two of her teammates were killed, leaving her, Jack, and Ianto as the only members of Torchwood, when they had already been understaffed for the amount of work they had to do. Then, more recently, there was a global alien attack that Torchwood helped deal with - unfortunately, Ianto was killed in the process, and Jack has disappeared. It’s been a very emotionally trying time for her, especially as she is four months pregnant and knows for a fact that either Jack or Ianto is the father - not that she’s told her husband, of course.
She was very close, in various ways, to all of her teammates in Torchwood. Least to Owen, despite having had a brief affair with him, because they butted heads quite a lot, as he is a much more cynical, selfish person than Gwen is. Tosh was someone that Gwen cared a lot for and wanted to look out for, though Gwen rarely knew what was going through Tosh’s head. Jack was the leader, she was his second in command. They definitely were attracted to each other - physically and emotionally - but only acted on said attraction once, after Tosh and Owen’s death, with Ianto as well, as more of a comfort thing than romantic sex. Gwen is not attracted at all to Ianto that way, though she thinks he’s a wonderful boy. He is probably her best friend in Torchwood, even moreso since Tosh and Owen died, and she loves to sit with him and gossip and discuss Jack or films or television when they have downtime.
WORLD: Well... Early 21st century earth! Only with aliens. >_> Basically, aliens exist. There’s also a rift, a sort of... Hole in the fabric of time and space, that runs through Cardiff. It leads to things falling through - alien things, sometimes that are broken, dead, or harmless; but far too often things that are dangerous and very much alive. And of course, aliens sometimes come to earth the normal way. And the supernatural just sort of... Happens around them. There are a lot of things that no one understands, but they exist anyway. Torchwood exists to, in essence, cover all this up and make sure that people don’t know any of this. To this end, they monitor the Rift, Cardiff, and to a lesser extent the rest of the UK for alien activity, and deal with it. It’s all very secretive and unbelievable.

THIRD PERSON: Two weeks. Two weeks of riding in a bumpy, uncomfortable wagon, while mildly nauseous and achy. Gwen could think of probably a thousand things she’d rather be doing, including her taxes and having a pelvic exam.
She couldn’t entirely blame Jack for insisting she ride in the wagon rather than walk, logically speaking. After all, she was now four and a half months pregnant and while she wasn’t exactly incapable of walking, she shouldn’t over-exert herself, especially when there was so little available in the way of medical knowledge and technology. Rationally, it made sense, and she agreed.
Whatever else Gwen might’ve been, however, “rational” wasn’t above “emotional” on the list - so instead, she sat in the stuffy wagon and plotted ways to kill Jack for getting her into this mess in the first place.
“Filling your belly full of hot coals while you’re still alive,” she called out the back of the wagon, where Jack was walking. A quick glance revealed that he was trying and failing not to laugh. “Or I’ll just make you eat your own bloody cooking.”
“Do you want to walk for a little while?” he asked, eyes dancing.
Gwen tried very hard not to look like a teenager begging to be allowed to go out with her friends, but she was afraid that she didn’t quite manage.
“God, yes!” She declared.
FIRST PERSON: Oh honestly, why can’t I ever get this to work properly? [ some blurriness, then Gwen’s face comes into focus on the screen ] There. Jack, I don’t know where you bloody well went off to, but I am five months pregnant and Ianto has a sprained ankle and we are neither one of us in a position to go looking for firewood.
[ sternly ] Get back here. We need to make supper and it’s very difficult to do that without a fire.
NOTES: I’m sick with what might be a sinus infection and unmedicated, so I feel like crap and am a little brain-fuzzy - please let me know if anything is unclear and I’ll do my best to clarify for you. :)
