Well I realize tonite that I HATE what I do for a living.  Yeah I have a good job, but will it take me to where I want to be in 5 years?  I doubt it.  So Im thinking of going back to school part time.  My job will pay for it.  I could go for free. I just dont know what I want to do.  Maybe a Biz degree.  I could major in taking over the world but ( Read more... )

Are you sure you hate it? It always seems to me that you took pride in your job, and that you really enjoyed doing things with your hands. You tend to do projects in your spare time that would suggest this as well. Is it the job you hate or the feeling of being 'stuck,' lack of progression, not enough money, your colleagues, or other factors?

Re: school part-time. Well, it'd be time-consuming, and would certainly hamper your extra-curricular activities, but it's wicked cool that your job would pay for it. Since you work for a University, is there a staff career guidance department, like our SDDU at the UoL? http://www.leeds.ac.uk/sddu/top/disability.html See 'professional development' here. Before you enroll, do a lot of self-searching and make sure the new career would be what you want...and keep us posted!

*hugs*

If you like doing stuff with your hands, maybe try getting a degree in engineering of some sort. The engineering world is *far* less uptight than the business world, believe me! :)

I guess what it boils down to is that I am tired of looking around at how accomplished the people around me are and where they are in their careers and then seeing that I am only just starting down a road I should never have gotten off of 15 years ago. I like what I do. It does give me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. But I know I am better than what I am doing. I dont know maybe its the whole quarter life crisis thing.

Anyway thats my rant. thanks for your support.

Step back a bit, Billy. First, it's not a contest. It doesn't matter where other people are in their careers. Some of them might very well envy where you are in your personal life (wife, children, etc.). Second, there are no objective benchmarks (I must have this done by this age, etc.). Third, you are employed (that alone would make about 20 million Americans envy you), and that gives you a much better launch pad for your next gig than the alternative. And if you have a chance to go to school, I'd say grab it with both hands. I can't wait until I can go back to school; my employer won't pay for it, and I can't afford a fourth college tuition right now.
:-)

I can give you one piece of advice that I think is pretty useful. Before you leave, have a less diffuse goal in mind, whether it is professional or academic. I've learned this the hard way.

Thank you Noah. That is really good advice and you are right. I am going to pull up my boot straps suck up my pride and just do what I need to to make myself better.
Thanks a lot. You really said it in a way that I understood.

I wish you all the luck in your future academic endevours. Ive always lived with the motto "Shoot for the roof land on your ass, Shoot for the moon land on the roof. " Guess what I thought was the moon all these years was really just the roof. Ill aim higher ill apply to school, and I will Get a BS in Const. Management.

Thanks again
