I don't think you're overreacting. However, you can't change a guy just because you will it so. It won't happen. He'll change when HE sees that he's got some changin' to do. Until then, you can only be patient and perhaps try to guide him so he reaches that place where he realizes that he's only headed for a dead end with the path he's taking right now. I hope that made sense. :)

I'm pretty sure you're problably doing it right now. You tell him that you think that he's a great guy and that you really care about him. You want to see him succeed. But right now, all the weed he's smoking, not going to school, not having a job...that's not going to get him anywhere but in trouble. Tell him that of course, he can't expect himself to make his life right overnight but if he gives it some dedication and time he'll soon see that he's reached a really nice place. One where he feels more stable and confident about himself and his life.
