once when I was little (too young to know better, I always say), my family went camping. they left us kids alone for a while and I ended up feeding the ducks tortillas. with tobasco sauce on them. hey, I thought they'd like it. turns out, I guess, that ducks really hate tortillas. 'cause everyone loves hot sauce, right?

ducks in a row, ducks in tow...ducks are slow, man.

heeee...

Duck, duck...bear? goodgolly June 16 2003, 05:42:10 UTC
For as long as I can remember, the summertime of my childhood was marked by an annual family vacation in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. My aunt had (and has) a cabin up there, complete with a canoe and lake and all, and that's where we'd stay ( ... )

dancing bears and all... luvpig June 16 2003, 11:21:52 UTC
grape soda does indeed taste nothing like grapes. and strawberry soda tastes nothing grapes, either. for that matter, orange soda tastes nothing like hot dogs.

bears are funny. one time I saw a big brown bear at a fair. he was in a dress and had ribbons in his hair. poor humiliated bear.

I went to an animal park in australia and got to feed all kinds of crap. the animals there are used to eating sugar puffs. but without sugar. I think the kangaroos were sick or drunk. they were, in any case, very lazy. lazy day, hop hop. food.

animals are lucky that they don't have to get jobs.

...yes...but! some animals DO have jobs! My sister always tells me about a particular program on the Animal Planet channel that she watches daily with her three favorite animals (Polly and Zeke, who are puppies, and Jason, who is her boyfriend). I forget what it is called, but it is all about Working Dogs. Dogs with jobs. Seeing-eye dogs and firehouse dogs and dogs who Do Good Things ( ... )

Yes...

I liked that verymuch, what with the happy quack-quack family, and the babies sleeping under mother's wing, and everything being warm and safe...

...and then I got to the last stanza...

...and now methinks I don't like it verymuch at all, what with the happy quack-quack getting cold and dying and such. I just think there MUST be better ways for the story to end.

Yes?

Ummm....not really, no. It's an old Icelandic folk song. Actually, Björk sings it on Gling-Glo. I think there's something very Catcher in the Rye about it.

I haven't (re)read Catcher in awhile...but...it always seemed to me that Holden's fantasy about being the Catcher in the Rye was a fantasy about protecting children from growing up, a wish to keep them innocent. I can see that in the folksong too - right up until it gets cold and the pond freezes.

I haven't heard the Bjork version...but I think maybe Holden would stop singing after the line about sledding. (Then again...perchance I'm really just talking about that other Catcher-In-the-Rye: Me!)
