She had this odd fascination with Naming Things...

Jul 01, 2003 07:33

I admit it: I am not-so-secretly fascinated by etymology and the meanings of names. We use names all the time, every single day, but rarely do we think about what those names mean when we say them. Really, it's not like I'm going to wake up tomorrow barefoot and pregnant...I just find this interesting, you know? It's another kind of poetry, and ( Read more... )

Truly strange, indeed!

Did Mr. Breast Cornsilk go by a nickname?
That one's a toughie, since there doesn't
even seem to be any good way to reduce
Breast Cornsilk into something almost
normal.

I've always liked to names things too. But I was scolded last week by my mother for wanting to name my fatty tumor.

Renaming people is fun also, but they tend to frown upon you for that.

Fatty tumor?!
Name or no-name, I hope everything is alright...?!

I think a mosquito tried to kiss me last night.
My lips are tingly and bleh.

Fatty tumor's are usually benign so it's all gravy. I can't see it either since it's in that blind spot on my back.

Sorry about the mosquito, they don't ask permission before they invade your bubble.

Karyn: a variation of Karen.

Karen: (Scandinavian) a diminutive form of Katerina.

Katerina: a variation of Katherine.

Katherine: (Greek) pure.

...and incidentally...

Jeremy: (English) a variation on the theme of Jeremiah.

Jeremiah: (Hebrew) God will uplift; a great Biblical prophet.

my favorite name for a girl is Staja. I got it from a clockwork orange, he called the state jails staja's for short, and i thought it was pretty. If i'm ever fortunate enough to have children (not literally, i'm a guy for chrissakes) i'd like to name my daughter Staja Lee (lee because its a family name and its also very pretty). for boys i've alway like the names Delano and Quincy.

Hi Justin (Latin; just, righteous)!

I have been trying to make the trek out to Tower to visit you and Roger (and also Mr. Ticketmaster) but alas: I appear to be still at home. Anyhoo -

Quincy: (French) fifth son's estate

Delano: (French) nut tree; (Irish) dark.

Lee: (Chinese) plum; (Irish) poetic; a short form of Ashley or Leah.

Staja is an interesting prospect. But how would you pronounce it? Stah-hah or Stay-jah or Stah-jah or Stay-hah? Stay-jah sounds a lot like Stacia, which is also a short form of Anastasia (Greek; resurrection).

My my my...;)

ooh Gýða is fun!

But is that "Gee-the" with a hard "G"
or a soft "G"? Cuz if it's a soft "G,"
I think I would be tempted to use "Gee"
as a nickname...and then I would probably
be tempted to turn the nickname into one of
my favorite catchphrases:

Gee Whiz.

I, too, love names and their meanings. Sometimes people freak out when they see my "2,001 Names for Baby" book, thinking there's something I haven't told them... but no, I'm not going to find myself barefoot and preggers anytime soon, either! It's just a great writing/creativity tool.

We have some common interests, and I like your journal, so I'm adding you as a friend. :-)
