I'm really sorry about your friend. That was my thought when I saw the article: "That poor guy was almost home."

We come home from Lucky and Kitsch's house most every Friday night and some Saturday nights at around 2am -- we do dinner and a movie while the babies play, then Suley sleeps on the couch and we load him up asleep and take him home. They live in Fulton and we're in South Side, so the drive home takes us through Shockoe Bottom. I am always hyper-aware of the other vehicles because God knows how many of them are drunks leaving bars. I think it is so unfair that one selfish moron has the power to end someone's life like that.

Had I read the article, I wouldn't have realized it was Matt -- he went by his middle name and the paper published his first name. But I did notice the headline on the story and think, "My god, another fatal accident."

Matt had a hard-on for death. As much as he talked about suicide, I never believed that he really wanted to die.

I'm sorry that you had to read this, because I know how you feel about your own accident. The difference is, though, that this asshole got himself drunk and then chose to get behind the wheel. He MADE the accident happen, so by that definition, it wasn't an accident (as yours truly was).

And can you believe that the drunk driver doesn't have a scratch on him???

I'm very sorry. For what it's worth, what you've written is both informative and touching.

It's hard for me -- it's been a long time since Matt and I were close, or had even talked much, so part of me thinks that I don't have the right to make emo posts about his death. But he was a BIG part of my life at a really crucial time for me, and losing him means that I've lost a small part of myself.
