Word to this rant. It's seriously getting annoying. I mean, honestly, I got into anime through dubs, and I hate seeing some of my fellow dub-watchers (former or not) always getting dissed for watching them. Hell, if the Bleach dub was caught up to the Japanese episodes, I'd totally stop watching them and start watching the English episodes, instead. I fucking hate reading subtitles sometimes.
1. Agreed. I concede I've thought some dubs were pretty horrible but not all dubs are created equal. I hate that some anime fans are so snide as to turn their noses up at them without even giving them a chance. They never consider the fact some Japanese anime fans may actually prefer an American dub over a track in their own native language!
2. Agreed. Exactly as you said it.
3. Agreed. Those 'terms' do not exist. You either like something or you don't, there is no 'I like it more than you do' intermediate.
I'm afraid I avoid dubs. Always. I've even been somewhat fond of a few, but when I watch the Japanese, I feel that the two usually contain different interpretations of a character. Not necessarily a bad interpretation, but I prefer to feel like I'm watching the original interpretation, and I have had discussions with dub fans where we've gotten confused because their interpretation due to the dub is so much different than mine.
I understand that some people prefer dubs. I really don't understand that preference myself, as I always feel like I'm missing something when I watch them.
And while living here, I've encountered Japanese dubs of English movies that I really wish people would watch subtitled, because of how much I am fond of the original actor's take. For instance, Robin Williams characters? Or Ellen Degeneres as Dory in Finding Nemo? There's a lot an actor brings to a character that's really unique to them
( ... )
The dub hate is nuts. I'm more of a manga snob, but... er, mostly, I tend to hear bad things and just stay away. I don't seek 'em out, but I'm not opposed to them in a blank slate way! If that made any sense.
ANYWHO, cheers to you for SAYING IT, since whoa, unpopular opinion. Definitely agreed on 2. and 3. -- and they are getting much better. For example, I actually prefer the "Advent Children" dub in many places (except, strikingly, how badly Mena Suvari killed Aerith).
