I think they but truly loved each other. After all, Julia did stay with Spike as a choice, a want. In such danger, risking your life to be with someone says something about how one feels toward the other. And Spike does seem obsessed, but being who he is, doesn't even freak when he sees Julia again. He doesn't even embrace he back
( ... )
I think a little had to do with the situation. They were in a really tight spot at the moment and if they had let themselves become totally overcome with passion and emotion they wouldn't have been able to function as they needed to try and escape.
During the whole series Spike reminisces about Julia, even calling her the other half of his soul or something to that extent, can't quite remember).
Yes, I think they did love each other deeply and truly but both also seemed to have the ability to distance themselves emotionally when necessary too and they both seemed to understand this about one another as well.
There was unfinished business with Vicious as well, and I think too, maybe Spike felt they'd never truly be free unless they could end it all right then or there, come what may.
Then going after Vicious even after Julia's death I personally think showed that Spike wanted to die, because then at least he could be with Julia.

wow! you're comment on asteroid blues makes so much sense... even the word "blues" is used twice! this makes much more sense now... yes... i like to believe it was true love too... deep down i am a true romantic... and i should learn to say "bah" to the psycho thriller theories that come along every once in awhile. :p
"I just wonder if Julia didn't die, would Spike have made it so he lived?"
good point.. spike has survived numerous bullet wounds, fallen out of buildings, held his breath and floated through space without his eye balls popping out... i like to think the memory of julia was the only thing keeping him alive, and i would imagine his fatalystic mentality turned suicidal at her death...

1. He does die. 2. Or he repeats what happened in RFB and doesn't actually die. And how he found to be wearing slightly altered clothing, an extra trench coat and that extra jacket in the half mark of the series and at the very end. It just ties together.
2. I mean he repeats what happened in Jupiter Jazz part II and doesn't actually die
