I'm sort of---dusgusted with this ep, to be honest. For the lack of a more eloquent word, but yes, disgusted about sums it up. There's so much that was wrong here - things that inherently reflect the SV writers utter disdain for certain elements of the show and Supes legacy, that in a way, I feel this ep encapsulates horrificly well SV' entire outlook this season. Watch 'Fortune' and basically you get an idea of TPTB' priorities.
The acting, IMO, was really, all round terrible - each one of our usually very dependable actors seemed as if they were trying way too hard. I just wanted to tell to relax already - this wasn't effortless comedy, it was a nonsensical, forced, farce.
I also felt the urge to punch the characters, almost every one of them, at some point or the other during the course of the ep - SV bringing out the violent side in me, a sure sign of my contempt for the proceedings of the hour.
After the brilliant writing for both Clark and Lois, and Clois in last week's ep, this? Was just beyond unjustifiable. I'm not even sure how to comprehend how any of this was supposed to be funny, or tolerable.
Was this supposed to be Chloe' last ep? Because here's where I'm at with her exit - at the end of the day? Way worse than 'Requiem.' I came to a realization while watching this, about TPTB' approaches towards both characters. While both were viewed at varying stages of the series as paragons of something or the other, the manner in which both were elevated upon certain pedestals is quite dis-similar. Lana was always viewed as the tragic figure - an aura of sacrifice was always present around her character in one way or the other, even in her dark phase, and even in her eventual departure from the show. Whereas with Chloe, I feel that TPTB viewed her, progressively from S5 onwards as on a parallel heroes journey alongside Clark. The need to accomodate her in places where clearly no presence from her was required post S5 onwards tells quite a story. And in many ways, I'll go so far as to say TPTB over the years, came to view Chloe as a far more worthy 'hero' than Clark, for where Clark was naturally blessed with all his powers (so really, who cares if he goes out and saves people, no biggie), Chloe is the one that earned, and hacked and whatnot'd her way into herodom.
And so, 'Fortune', to my mind, perfectly reflects my argument. In a Superman show, with Clark literally one step short of donning The Suit, we have Chloe, not him, mention for the first time two very closely linked characters to the Supes and DC mythos.
The first time we hear of frikkin Bruce and Diana on this show, it's in relation to Chloe. That's right, not Clark, but Chloe.
If this was indeed Chloe' final ep - well, though I may look back on certain moments of hers from the series, if ever I do a rewatch, fondly, my instant gut reaction is, Goodbye and Farwell - you will not be missed.
Harsh? Perhaps, but this season has been rather harsh on me as a fan, so I say all's fair.
