I found a local poker game last night. It was at a favorite bar, so I figured it was worth checking out. The idea behind bar poker is that everybody makes money. The bar pays the poker league to bring in people, the league pays a dealer to come into the bar, the people who come to play pay for it all through their food and drinks, and in many cases ( Read more... )

so, I know it's fun, but are you any good at this? When did you first start playing, how long you been playing, how long you been good, etc....

Any book learnin' or has this all been done at the table?

I'm pretty decent at it. It's all been table learning and I've been playing for about two or three months. I picked it up quickly and people were surprised that I was taking so many of them out my first game. I was surprised that they were expecting to take me out all the time just because I was new.

And I did not get to the second bar to play that game.

The biggest mistakes newbies make is thinking everything is good "if only..." something comes up on the flop. You wouldn't believe the hands some tyros will chase.

The second is thinking you always have to have a hand to play. (this one's being countered by all the TV poker; they play all bluffs like they were playing no-limit hold-em; can't do that in the real world for long.

And then, there's the place luck plays--you can beat a lot of people if you're good, but eventually, you've gotta be lucky as well. Once you've got this, and the dicipline to sit through times of no cards, the game is a great one.

Most people who thought they could take me out figured that, while I knew the game well enough, I was still getting the rank of the hands which would likely mean that I didn't know that I had the best hand or that I would play a hand that wasn't quite as good as theirs.

I tend to think that 9 hands out of 10 (depending on the # of players in the game) should be fairly boring.
