Reza: The Negotiations Continue

Oct 29, 2008 19:01

The negotiations with the Guild were rough on some points, but Mia and Draco were able to work out a deal. The only deal they could work out for accommodations, however, was to share Lily's bedroom.

Lily, the granddaughter of the Thieves Guild leader, was very delighted about it.

Draco wasn't very delighted about it, but he got over it once it was established that he could still share a bed with Mia as long as there wasn't any funny business.

The night went fine up until about 12:45, when Lily woke up crying.

Mia wakes up and asks with concern, “Lily? What's wrong?”

“I dreamed the bad lady took me away again!” she says, sniffling. “And Luna wasn't with us this time, so it was even scarier!”

“Shh, it's okay, Lily,” Mia says, leaning over to hug the girl and stroke her hair. “Do you want to sleep in our bed tonight?”

Lily nods against her and wipes her tears away.

“Draco? Draco, darling, could you please make room? Lily is sleeping with us tonight.”

Draco responds with a grumble and a careless arm flopping over her stomach.

“Oh goodness, he's really out,” she murmurs to Lily.

The girl clings even more.

“It's all right. I can always come over to your bed.”

“No, love, stay here,” Draco murmurs back, apparently in his sleep.

“.......dear, are you awake?”

“..............................No.”

His eyes shut tight and he frowns.

“I'm sorry he's being so stubborn,” she says apologetically to Lily, scooting up on the bed as she does to rest against the headboard. “Here, you can sit with me and I'll find a story for you.”

Lily scrambles up into Mia's lap...

...right where Draco's hand was sitting.

He starts up and takes his hand back with a whine of, “Mia...”

“I'm sorry dear, but I did tell you to make room.”

One of Mia's arms goes around Lily and she picks up a book of stories from her bag.

“Why should I have to?” Draco grumps with a pout.

“Because Lily had a nightmare and she wants to sleep with us. Now keep quiet for the story.”

“But she's got her own bed. Should sleep there.”

Mia strokes Lily's hair some more and says, “Draco, she's scared.”

“But can't she be comfortable in her own bed?” Draco pressed on. It wasn't a privilege he was allowed very often at the same age. He's starting to realize why now.

Or perhaps he's jealous?

Either way, Mia has already started reading from Peter Pan.

“Mia, listen to me,” he tries again.

After a while in the reading, Lily interrupts with, “But where's England?”

“That's where Draco is from, sweetheart.”

“Oh.”

A little more reading.

“What's Big Ben?”

A pause, and then Mia turns to ask Draco, “What's Big Ben?”

“It's a building in London,” Draco grumbles. “Big ruddy clock. A muggle clock.”

“It's a clock,” Mia says.

“Oh.”

And they continue to read.

“She's not going to stay here the whole night is she?”

“Shush!” Lily says, a finger to her lips. “Peter's gotta rescue Princess Tiger Lily!”

Lily seems to like that name.

“Who?” he asks.

“Princess Tiger Lily! She's the Indian chief's daughter and Captain Hook and his pirates kidnapped her so Peter's gotta save her!”

“What the Merlin is an Indian? Mia, what kind of story is that?”

“Peter Pan,” Mia answers. “Miniver suggested that I read it. He said I was like Wendy.”

“And here I thought some of it was a wizard tale...”

“You mean you've been listening?”

Draco fidgets and admits, “A little....just the flying parts. Did think her remark about fairies was very silly. Everybody knows they exist.”

“They do?!” Lily asks in surprise.

“They do.”

“Wow...”

He blinks at the little girl and asks, “You didn't know?”

“I've never seen one before.”

“She couldn't see the ones in the garden,” Mia says.

“But I thought it's different now,” Draco says, unsure.

“Draco, fairies don't live out here in Reza,” Mia explains. “They like gardens, not desert areas.”

“Oh.”

Mia smiles softly and continues to read. It isn't much longer before Lily falls asleep.

“She looks so peaceful,” Mia says, stroking the girl's hair.

“...Well, I suppose she's all right now,” Draco admits.

Mia moves down to get more comfortable, Lily still asleep on top of her.

“Do you mind if she sleeps between us?”

He gives her a very put upon sigh and says, “Not like I have a sodding choice, do I?”

“Not if you want a happy wife in the morning,” Mia says, gently moving Lily to the spot between them on the bed, her arms still around the girl.

He sighs again.

“I know. Night, love.”

Mia reaches over and gives him a kiss before saying, “Thank you, darling. Good night.”

And it's not long before Mia drifts off herself, her hand slowly stroking Lily's hair until she's completely asleep. Draco reluctantly watches before going to sleep himself, but not before the thought that comes with watching Mia play with Alhena before flits through his mind: They're not ready. They're really not ready. Not even close to ready.

But when they are, Mia would make a good mother.
