Mia was pleasantly surprised by a note saying that Alex, Luna, and Nall were visiting the mainland in order to see Ramus. Jessica had the wonderful idea for everyone to have dinner together and made arrangements at once. Conversation was light, the food was wonderful, and everything seemed to be going swimmingly. Just the Five Heroes, plus Luna and Nall, enjoying their time together.
It was the perfect time, Mia figured, to let everybody know.
"-and we're really excited about this project," Nash continues in the conversation. "It will show the students coming to the Magic Guild for scholarly reasons that we also need to focus on our practical skills as well."
"That's a wonderful idea, Nash," Luna says. "We would love to come see it when it happens."
"I might even want to see that," Kyle admits, bouncing Rachel on his knee. "And I know half-pint here would love to see, too. Right honey? Want to see Uncle Nash, Auntie Mia, and Uncle Draco put on a magic show?"
"Magic?" Rachel asks, her face lighting up.
"We'll save you front-row seats," Mia replies.
There's a brief pause, with Jessica looking closely over Mia.
And then the priestess goes, "You're pregnant, aren't you, Mia?"
There's a collective clattering of silverware, a few chairs scooting back, and a number of funny faces. Except for Rachel, who simply looked curious and turned her head up to see Kyle.
"Wha's tha' mean?" she asks.
Kyle turns his head down to her and says, "Well, it means, if what Mom says is right, that Auntie Mia's going to have a baby."
"A baby?" Rachel says.
"Well, you are, aren't you?" Jessica presses.
Mia simply blushes and nods her head.
A few gasps are tossed in with the collective reaction.
Then Nash asks, "Oh, so that's what happened before, isn't it?"
Mia nods again and says, "It's why I've been feeling different, yes."
Jessica gets up and gives Mia a hug.
"Oh, I'm so happy for you, Mia!" the priestess says. Then gives her friend a look and goes, "Now how far along are you and when exactly were you going to tell me?"
"I was going to tell you soon, I promise," Mia answers sheepishly.
"How far?" Jessica asks again.
"...................I start week seven tomorrow?"
Jessica noogies her.
"Honey, you should have told me as soon as you found out so that I could get to work on things to do before the baby's born. For crying out loud, you've only got a little over a month left in your first trimester. Do you know when you're due? Does Draco know? Does your mother know? Have you been taking care of yourself?"
"I know, I know," she says. "And yes, to all of your questions."
"You need to come by so I can properly look you over, make sure everything checks out physically. I have to make sure my best friend's all right."
"O-of course," Mia answers, blinking a little.
"Great! We'll set something up for when you're at eight weeks. Just come by then and I'll make sure you're taken care of."
Jessica returns to her seat and they finish the dinner.
Afterward, Nash and Mia walked back to Vane.
"You could have told me before, you know?" Nash says, his hands behind his head. It's not said angrily, just a matter of fact.
"I know, but I wasn't sure how to say it."
"Well, that's easy enough to understand. It would have been a little awkward, even if things would have made more sense."
"Come to think of it," Mia says, "I'm not sure if it would have been more awkward to let you know sooner or not."
"It's all right, Mia," Nash replies. "It's yours and Draco's business, not mine."
"It was your business when that accident in the library happened. As soon as my problems hurt you, they become your problems."
"I wasn't that hurt, more annoyed. Now that you've told me why, it doesn't bother me anymore. You couldn't help it and I'll just have to be more careful."
"Oh Nash, I know what happened was an accident! It wasn't that easy to convince Draco it was an accident, but I was able to stop him from coming after you."
"Hmph," Nash says. "I can take care of myself."
"I know you can, but I didn't want my Premiers fighting at such a crucial time."
"Hmmm. You do have a point."
Mia softly laughs. It's so much like the both of them.
"So, how's Draco taking it?" Nash asks.
"About as well as to be expected, though he doesn't seem to know a lot about the matter. He asked me if it was just...going to happen within the week."
The Premier does his best to contain his laughter.
"I would have hoped he had paid attention when Jessica was pregnant," he gets out with a little snort of a laugh.
"Surely he was feeling a bit homesick at the time."
"Ah...I wasn't thinking about that."
"It'll be all right. I gave him some books to read about the matter and I've been getting week-by-week updates at Milliways."
"Oh yeah, I bet there's a lot of information you can find there."
A pause.
"So..." Nash asks. "Out of curiosity..."
"Hmm? What, Nash?"
"I hope this doesn't sound too weird, but I think you're the only girl I'd feel comfortable asking this, but what did it say?"
"What did what say?"
"The week-by-week updates you mentioned? What do they know?"
"Oh those. They're really incredible," Mia answers. "The last one said that, at six weeks, the eyes, ears, mouth, arms, and legs are already starting to form. And there's a steady heartbeat now."
"Wow... It's incredible what they know there."
Nash tilts his head and looks at Mia.
"And all of that is happening right now?"
"I know," Mia says, looking sheepish. "I don't really feel anything. Except occasional nausea and fatigue. Sometimes I notice other changes, but they're very slight."
"So you're better.....there?" he tries and fails to discreetly ask, gesturing to his own chest to spare her a bit of embarrassment.
"For the most part?" she replies, blushing. "It's not bothering me like it did at first."
"Well, at least there's that."
Another pause.
"Is it weird that I asked you?" Nash asks. "I don't...mean it to be anything offensive or too personal, I'm just curious about what's happening to my friend."
"Nash, you haven't bothered me at all," Mia answers, putting a hand on his shoulder. "You're a good friend and I'm glad to know you think about me."
Nash smirks and goes, "So, when are you and Draco going to be begging me to babysit, huh?"
She giggles before saying, "Around late February, early March. When you're not busy running the Guild while we adjust to parenthood."
"Oh by the Goddess, the city's going to come to an end!" he says.
The both of them laughed all the way back to the Magic Guild.
