Joining a new club

A couple of months ago I had a tube inserted up my rectum to check why I've been anemic for more than 2 years. That, in addition of a specific analysis have determined that I'm a coeliac. Up to this moment, I didn't have any perception that this could happen. As far as I know, just badgerpdx has the same issue in my friends list. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So sorry to hear of this Xavi and am glad it's manageable.

Sad that this also includes good beer, damn, a good, ice cold beer on a warm day is SO refreshing you know? :-)

Anyway, glad you are working to deal with this bit of a setback.

Why? Gluten is (unfortunately) very poisonous to us. And it's not like you can skip one day...

I met someone who was recently diagnosed as needing to eat a gluten-free diet so when I then saw a cookbook at the library called Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef, I checked it out. I think the lucky thing for you is that you're already used to cooking for yourself. I imagine it would be a lot harder to deal with this for someone who primarily eats take-out or eats at restaurants. Anyhow, I was impressed by how good a lot of the dishes sounded and looked. I mostly looked at the dishes that were just of regular food (and not trying to convert things to gluten-free. For example, I only skimmed the recipes for gluten-free bread and gluten-free crackers since I didn't think I was going to buy the alternate flours any time soon.) I had peeked at her blog occasionally over the years too. Perhaps you'll find some recipes you like there too: http://glutenfreegirl.com/

Hum. Thank you for the link... I'm browsing the site now and, although we have things a "little easier" here thanks to labelling and alternatives availability, I'm surely trying something :)

Yeah..things are getting easier here in the US in the grocery stores too. Or at least I keep seeing more and more products labelled as being gluten-free. Restaurants still seem like a dicey proposition here. Some places are very much aware of gluten-free needs and other places seem not to have heard of it. I liked the gluten-free girl website because the focus seems to celebrate the things she CAN still eat instead of being sorry for the things she can no longer eat. Her gluten sensitivity seems to be quite high though. If gluten so much as touches her food, sounds like she'll get ill for a few days.

Eating out here is a little challenging but I've had a couple of success stories. One is a sandwhich chain that has a full line of gluten-free sandwiches (and they were GOOD!). The other a local restaurant who had got some training from their union and simply verified I could eat half of their offerings (they even changed sides for me!)
