In recent weeks I have been eating a lot of nuts. *pauses to contemplate the obvious jokes that will be incoming* and for some reason I started thinking about the ideal nut in certain situations

Totally agree with you on the pistachios and peanuts (technically not a nut, but we'll go with it).
No nuts should EVER be in chocolate, unless it is finely pulverised hazelnut in the form of praline ganache! No debate will be entered into. :D
Don't eat salads, but cashews for the win - and in stirfries. Actually, I think cashews could almost trump the non-nut peanut for salty nibbling goodness, except oMG the calories.
As for Cakes - see chocolate (with the exception of fine ground almond meal as a base for some flourless cakes).
As for honey/sugar coated? Maybe one or two macadamias, but again, nuts + sweet = unhappy Mere.
You totally wanted to know my position on all these, right?
:D
Oh, btw, pickled english walnuts in stews = awesome!
Hmm may need to try this pickled walnuts in stew thing at some point.
Cakes + nuts are not all that great I have found, but if it is there almonds win. I quite like sliced almonds on top of cakes, or as you say almond meal as a base.
I had Hans last night, and because I didn't want rice they gave me extra cashews on my cashew chicken. AMAZING.
The best nut-in-chocolate experience I've had is from John Walker Chocolatier. Whole hazelnuts in delicious milk chocolate, packaged in chunks, all rustic-like. Craps all over Cadbury, and I LOVE Cadbury. They used to have a shop at Carousel, but now they're only at Karrinyup, and I have enough self-respect to not drive all that way for chocolate, haha.
I haven't had pistachio's for a long long time. I will remedy this.
I have to combat your salad suggestion with pine nuts. Pine nut salad! Only now i am scared of them because of a phenomenon called 'pine mouth' which a lady at my uni got and it sounds pretty awful.
