I liked it, but the last time I read it was like in fifth grade so I'm hazy on the details. I really enjoyed Fahrenheit 451. You might want to try it out. It's by Ray Bradbury and it was the first book that I read that challenged my preconceived notions about good/bad.

LIke my friend shell below you had stated...communism is more a punchline to a joke than any real threat to me so maybe thats why i didnt "get" the book. I found it laughable when it was trying to be serious...honestly the whole time winston was in the "ministry of love" i was thinking "come on get this over with"...I did notice that alot of the torture techinques in that part of the book have been used widely in literature and movies since...so maybe its nothing new to me.

I read part of 451 once...for a book report...hah, so you can guess the grade i receieved. Maybe i ll pick it up again.

Still the last "great" book i read happened to be a new novel of fiction "invisible monsters" by chuck pahlinuk. With the recent mood ive been in lately the book keeps coming back into my mind. Not to give away any of the plot...but much like fight club it goes along with the idea of hitting bottom so one can build themselves up into a completly different person not just an altered version of who they used to be.

How is your day

I'm not a big fan of Chuck's. Try David Sedaris or Augusten Burroughs or Laurie Notaro. They write quirky memoirish things.

My day was long, but great overall. Yours?

Atleast you've read him. It's not often i find people have read any of his books, but know him as "the guy that wrote that movie fight club". Bah, which books have you read ellen? Also if i promised to be extra super nice and careful could i borrow a david sedaris book as i recall you having a nice section of shelf filled with them =)

The terror the books brings, depends on the time you read it.

You have to understand at the time when 1984 first came out, communism was spreading across the world. And people where terrified, that they too would have to live under a communist state.

In this day and age communism is a punch line for Saturday Night live jokes. And, everyone is worried about terrorism.

So the book doesn't have the same effect of making you think...dammit this really could happen to me.

Hence, to you it doesn't seem as good. Because you are living in a different time, as when I read it.

At least those are my thoughts.

I understand that the times when it was written and the times when it has been read...are completly different than when i am reading it now. The idea in in the book of being completly ruled by a highly illogical system of government was annoying...but, iono, i went into it with the expectations of a literary masterpiece...and came away dissapointed.

Maybe this goes with my "bad taste" in all things. I quite often like the bad things and dis like the good things in life and art...or so people tell me.

*shrug* It was over all an alright book, i just wouldnt read it again if i didnt have too.

HOw is your day?
