This is a repost from another community that I'm part of, explaining a common misconception about the prize and what it represents.

Ok to everyone who asks why he got it:

The Nobel Peace Prize is often given to nominees involved in a peace process that the committee wants to endorse and encourage. There have been a number of precedents for this, including David Trimble and John Hume, who won the award for their efforts in the Northern Irish peace process. They were nominated for this prize before February 1st, 1998, despite the fact that the Good Friday agreement wasn't signed until April 10, 1998 and didn't come into effect until December 2, 1999.

The committee saw his commitment to anti-nuclear proliferation, and wanted to encourage him to pursue that path.
