SPN Icon Tutorial + Photoshop Action

Tutorial for cleaning and recoloring images - especially for the blue toned images from the Supernatural TV show. But is applicable for ANY image.


All SPN screencaps in this tutorial were made by bluebear-74


Stage 1:

Download the full size image used here
Open it in Photoshop & Crop to 100 x 100 pixels
Duplicate the layer & Rename the new layer "clean" 

Stage 2:
Image>Adjustments>Shadow/Highlight

Check Show More Options to show all options available

Shadow
Amount: 30
Tonal Width: 50
Radius: 100

Highlight
Amount: 10
Tonal Width: 25
Radius: 30

Adjustments
Color Correction: +35
Midtone: Contrast: -5
 
 Stage 3:
Filters> Noise> Median
Radius: 2

Edit> Fade
Opacity: 30
 

Stage 4:
Filters> Sharpen> UnSharp Mask
Amount: 50
Radius: 1.5
Threshold: 2

Duplicate the layer & Rename the new layer "recolored" 

Stage 5

Image> Adjustments> Selective Color

Red
Cyan: -10
Magenta: +5
Yellow: +5
Black: 0

Yellow
Cyan: -100
Magenta: 0
Yellow: +40
Black: 0

White
Cyan: +20
Magenta: -10
Yellow: -10
Black: -10

Blacks
Cyan: +20
Magenta: +20
Yellow: +20
Black: -20
 

Stage 6:

Image> Adjustments> Levels
Input Levels (top three boxes):   5    .95   245
Output Levels (bottom two boxes):   20   255

Image> Adjustments> Auto Contrast

Edit> Fade
Opacity: 35

Set Layer Opacity for "recolored" layer to 75%

End Notes
I record these steps as an action and have the computer automatically batch process entire folders of screencaps (File> Automate> Batch Process).
This way literally hundreds of pics are done in a fraction of the time.
