Summary: Mark and Jinyoung communicate through post-it notes.
'What itches?' Jinyoung quietly thought as he felt something across the bridge of his nose, causing it to twitch at the odd feeling the object was leaving on his face. It felt stick and itchy, so much so, that it didn't take long for those uncomfortable feelings to get stronger as the minutes progressed, sleep eventually leaving him because of it. Unable to deal with it for long, he couldn't help but frown before he was pulling the object away, only to read the smooth yet curly scrawl:
Looked like you were studying pretty hard last night, just wanted to say good luck on your test! :D
-M
Frown leaving his face while he read, Jinyoung couldn't help but be touched instead of annoyed as he had been seconds before. His roommate had remembered the test that he had this week, a test that had him more than a bit worried as it was worth quite a big chunk of his grade and since he wanted to do well, he had been studying a lot more than usual. And Mark had noticed that, even if Jinyoung felt as if he wasn't around enough. Especially since most college students usually saw their roommates, while Jinyoung barely saw him at all. So it was nice to know that he cared, at least a little bit that is, especially when Jinyoung could only remember seeing him a maximum of two times since he had started living with him, and even then, it wasn't for long.
And while Jinyoung could understand why he didn't get to see Mark that often, the other double-majoring in mechanical engineering and computer science, most likely holed up in the library or various labs around campus, it was weird to Jinyoung that he barely saw him. Even when Mark was at the dorm, Jinyoung was either too busy with going to classes himself or was already asleep whenever Mark got back from doing homework or woke up and got ready for school. However, despite barely seeing each other, the two of them eventually found a way to communicate, even if it was in post-it note form.
It was sweet nonetheless to see this type of post-it note from his roommate though, rather than the other's schedule for the week, telling him how often Mark wasn't going to be in the dorm, obviously too busy with school work to really make time for much. Sometimes Jinyoung wondered if the other even had friends with his workload, especially since working too much was stressful and it would just suck to not have any friends during college, even after a few years of going there. But going by the notes that Mark usually gave him, many of them filled with smilies and other emoticons, Jinyoung couldn't help but feel like Mark must have had friends. It would be weird if he didn't to be honest, especially since the weird kid that walked around campus with a Nerf gun, thinking zombies were real and were going to take over the world one day, had friends. So Mark must have had friends, but they must have been just as busy as Mark was, or were doing one of the same majors as him and they spent all their time doing homework or studying.
Hoping that the other wasn't killing himself with homework, Jinyoung couldn't help but quickly grab a green pad and pen to write back to his roommate, his handwriting worse than chicken scratch:
Thanks!
If you want some, there's extra curry in the fridge, please help yourself.
-J
Pushing back his chair so he could make his way to the kitchen and lounge area of the dorm, he quickly stuck the green post-it note to the fridge, knowing that Mark would see it later. The neon green a bright contrast to the cream color of the refrigerator that it would be hard to miss.
Unable to stop himself from wondering if Mark even liked green, especially that neon shade of green that most post-it notes were colored, Jinyoung couldn't help but wonder what Mark's favorite color was. But not having spoken to the other for more than a few minutes max, he really didn't know. Curiosity getting the better of him, he quickly grabbed another post-it and stuck it to the fridge right below the other one, writing:
What's your favorite color?
What's your favorite color?
Mark silently read as he waited for the curry to warm up, surprise flickering across his features as he took in his roommate's messy scrawl. Jinyoung never asking such a question before, even though they had been roommates for a while now and had been exchanging post-its for a couple of weeks, this type of question was long overdue. But despite that, Mark couldn't help but wonder about the sudden change, especially when the two had been keeping to themselves for a while now. Mark usually being way too busy with school, usually holed up in the library, various labs around campus, or in class,
Mark silently read as he waited for the curry to warm up, surprise flickering across his features as he took in his roommate's messy scrawl. Jinyoung never asking such a question before, even though the two of them had been roommates for a while now and had been exchanging post-its for a couple of weeks, this type of thing was obviously way overdue. But despite that, Mark couldn't help but wonder about the sudden change, especially when the two had only been keeping each other up to date on their schedules, wishing each other good luck on a test, or the occasional note about sharing leftovers with each other. Other than that, neither of the two had been wiling to go much farther than what they had been doing, both being quite content to leave each other be.
So seeing a second post-it note below the first, something that was quite out of the ordinary for the two, Mark couldn't help but be a little bit surprised by it. Even though most roommates should have been doing something like this weeks ago, the two getting to know each other and actually talking face to face, instead of what they were doing and most likely were going to continue throughout the year. Especially when Mark's schedule was as busy as it was and it wouldn't be until his fifth and final year would his schedule be much lighter than it was now; Mark having left a lot of his non-technical classes for last.
However, it probably wasn't a good thing to not know who your roommate was, despite their schedules not matching up. And since Mark didn't really have nothing to lose if he did get to know the other, even if it was through post-it notes, Mark could only move to grab a pen and pad from his backpack to write, continuing the trend that Jinyoung had set forth:
Thanks for the food. :)
My favorite color is blue, what's yours?
-M
Finishing up with a smile, Mark quickly went back to his business, nothing really changing, except for the fact that communication between him and his roommate became a lot easier after that.
Days passing as they usually did, Mark still bogged down by school, while Jinyoung did his best to juggle school, sleep, and having a social life all at once, the two continued to miss each other completely, despite the notes increasing little by little between the two. Both of them had taken to writing notes to each other during their free time, the two answering each other's questions between classes and meals, that the two were finally getting to know each other.
Jinyoung quickly finding out that not only did Mark like the color blue, liked caramel macchiatos, Iron Man, and was partial to his mother's homecooked meals, but he also liked to dance and do karaoke from time to time as well. While Mark on the other hand, was finding Jinyoung to be quite the interesting yet fun guy, even if he was getting this information from their written conversations instead of actually talking to him. But with Jinyoung declaring his liking of video games, reading books that Mark had put on his 'to read' list as soon as any of his breaks started, and actually being interested in some of the sports that Mark liked, Mark couldn't help but like the guy and think he was cool.
So it wasn't long before the dorm that they shared became quite colorful as the days turned to weeks, their conversations scattered around the dorm, neither of them having the heart to throw them away just yet. Even if most of their conversations were still quite short and straight to the point, it didn't take long for that to change as well. Because barely three weeks after Jinyoung's note had changed things between the two, Jinyoung ended up mentioning his love for anything Marvel, that Mark couldn't help but rip a page from his notebook and ask him a load of questions of which heroes, villains, and stories that he liked best before posting it to the fridge. While Jinyoung could only chuckle at how in depth Mark's questions had been before answering them with a note just as long, if not longer, with his own questions on who Mark liked best, despite having known that Mark was a fan of Iron Man.
But once Jinyoung had mentioned League of Legends a day later after finding out Mark's favorite Marvel characters and stories, things changed again. But this time, there was actual banter as Mark gave Jinyoung his stats that he had obtained during his sophomore year of college before having to retire and focus on school. Mark quick to tell Jinyoung that when they had a free night together that they should play, all the while joking about how Jinyoung should take it easy on him, despite being quite good at the game when he stopped playing it.
Unable stop himself from laughing at the written emoticons that Mark had given, Jinyoung could only reply with an Of course, but not if you're hustling me on a pink post-it.
But despite Jinyoung answering back with that short, concise note, the slew of post-it notes that had become quite common between the two swiftly expanded to a slew of much longer letters instead, their conversations not so limited anymore. The Marvel letters that they had exchanged barely a couple of days before quickly lost their fluke status as the two found themselves writing much longer notes for each other during their days, both having quite a bit to say. Both of them finding things that they never really expected to find and developing feelings that they never really expected to feel, that the two couldn't help but want to continue what they were doing, even if they didn't see each other.
Because despite that, they were getting along quite well, were learning things they probably would never have learned about each other if they didn't start writing these letters, and were becoming fast friends. But as the letters continued, each one longer than the last, each of them touched, yet giddy, whenever they got one, it was only safe to say that whatever friendship that they had was turning into something much more deep and profound.
Then the letters soon felt like they weren't enough, but not having the means to change what was happening at the moment, both still busy with school and other things, it was another two weeks until things started to change again... But this time, in a good way.
“Hey, Jinyoung! Hurry up, man, we don't want to be late!” Jinyoung heard Jackson say from the end of the hall as he tried his best to wiggle the lock on his door open, having a little bit of a problem with his key. Only to get the door open a moment later before yelling, “I got it Jackson, just give me five!”
“Alright, I'll be downstairs waiting, don't take too long man. Teach will have our heads.”
Muttering “I know” as he quickly made his way into the room, not noticing a pair of red and black shoes by the door, as he grabbed his book. Jinyoung almost fell over when he noticed Mark sitting at his desk, glasses perched on his nose, and a blue shirt with the Avengers' logo across his chest, he couldn't help but let out a “Mark” in surprise. Especially since he was sure Mark wasn't supposed to be here and should have been in class right now.
Looking up from his book, Mark could only turn to the other boy with a small smile on his face, “Hey, Jinyoung, forgot your book?”
Giving a small chuckle as he quickly rebalanced himself, he couldn't help but rub the back of his neck giving a sheepish “Not really...” before curiously asking, “What are you doing here? Don't you have class?”
“Canceled and since the library seemed a little bit packed, I thought I would do a little bit of studying in here today,” Mark quickly answered, only to blush a little, “But it's not working out as well as I hoped...”
“Is it important that you study today or can you take a day off?” Jinyoung couldn't help but ask, especially since he was pretty sure that Mark studied way too much and the longer he stood there, he couldn't help but want to ditch class and see if he could hang out with Mark for a little bit instead. It had been months since they
had started exchanging post-its and letters, and he had been wanting to hang out with Mark for a while now, so much so that he had been wondering if he was ever going to get the chance. But seeing Mark looking kind of cute in his glasses and actually being in the dorm instead of somewhere else, Jinyoung was quite tempted to ditch.
“Maybe... Why?”
“You're always studying or doing some type of school work that I never see you take any time off... I can't help but wonder if you relax at all.”
Giving a small laugh at Jinyoung's question, Mark could only reply, “I do relax when I get the chance, but these past couple of weeks I haven't really gotten a chance to do so... Maybe I should take a couple of hours off today.”
“Really?”
Shaking his head at Jinyoung's response and the blush that was appearing across his cheeks, Mark couldn't help but turn his attention back to the book in Jinyoung's hands, “Go to class, we can hang out for a little bit after, okay? Maybe play a game of League of Legends?”
Unable to stop himself from smiling, Jinyoung could only give, “Cool! I'll meet you here in an hour,” before looking at his watch to see the time, only for his eyes to widen at how much time he had to get to class, “Got to go, see you later!”
“See you.”
'What is that?'
Feeling something that made his forehead itch, exponentially so, Mark couldn't help but wake up with a groan about wanting to sleep a little bit more before pulling off the post-it note that was stuck to his forehead. Only to see Jinyoung's messy, yet kind of cute scrawl:
Finally woke up before you, first time, you know, so it's a bit exciting. But besides that, we have the day off in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date with me to see the new Avengers?
- J
Unable to stop himself from smiling, especially since he really did like Jinyoung and liked hanging out with him, Mark could only reply:
Yes, it's a date.
