Politics... politics..and more politics... a rant about
I've never been Little Miss Sally USA and i think i've been rather critical of our nation and the goings on in it. I never get offended when people say Bush is a prick and that Americans are stupid and fat... hey.. it's a pretty accurate stereotype! but today in class i was realizing how EVERYTHING i see and interact with is from this American ethnocentric viewpoint, granted Australia is pretty much an American knock-off as far as culture, but there's a lot of little policies and points of view they have that i just can't wrap my head around. for instance, they're completely comfortable with being ruled by the Queen, i've talked to a lot of aussies about that and for the most part they're pretty indifferent to the situation. one thing that struck me was someone's comment
"Yeah, we're under the crown but we're all really under Bush."
it's true, but i can't figure out how the whole world sees that as OK - how has he gotten away with it for so long? He said fuck you France, Fuck you Iraq, and then the biggest shock, Fuck you United Nations. WE FUCKING COINED THE UNITED NATIONS!!!! I know nothing here is a big shock, everyone knows it in the states but it's kinda hush hush there. we talk about it but only in terms of "bush is a prick" and then the topic is dropped. Here the people are much more educated and involved in American politics than most Americans are - pathetic really. American's are under Bush because stupid-sheep-fucking-middle-america thought that 4 more years of war was better than allowing the possible corruption of 'the sanctity of marriage.' i'm totally off topic but to end this briefly, Americans are stuck with being ruled by an idiot, the rest of the world shouldn't have to be too and i'm surprised there isn't more terrorist bombings on US soil and the biggest surprise (that i've been saying for years) is that Bush hasn't been assassinated yet. Look at the previously assassinated presidents, they were far less loathed than Bush, what makes him gold?
but back to my original rant, i've never been a nationalist, i cringe at the idiots who wave the American Flag in front of their white picket fence but in the last few days i've become a little defensive - in my thoughts anyway, haven't actually went off on someone yet - i'm not really sure what's triggering it but i really don't like the idea of turning into one of those pig headed americans. It's just really hard to detach yourself from the culture you've grown up in (even though you don't necessarily share those views) when you're in a completely different one, especially one that hates your culture; even though, ironically, they completely copy it. They like everything they steal from you and then refuse to acknowledge the ideology behind the things they don't. I just realized i'm completely generalizing, obviously not everyone has those views, but it's the overall vibe i've been getting the last few days and i think that's why i'm getting defensive - not to push the ideology, but to explain it.
