there are so many harmonious belief systems available (Christianity, "care of the soul," Buddhism, socially driven actions). how do you know which one is really true? or is there such a thing as Truth? should we celebrate the human condition or work toward something else? what role does rationality play?

i think i need to declare..

all religions and philosophies lack a real truth to them (while you can explain the universe with science there isn't a particular right or wrong to all of this) but they can ease the suffering that comes with life. we should celebrate the human condition while moving forward. also, rationality is integral to where we as a species are heading. if we can discard our myths and accept ourselves for what we really are, smart animals, we can decide to stop destroying our planet and killing each other over something as ridiculous as whose god is greater.

you sound just like ishmael, and your view operates on foundational beliefs that are not evident

or perhaps i should say... not impartially true.. so then what you should do is figure out why these foundations are so important to you and if you can, find out why they should be objective truths and thus evident

they operate on science and historical study, and while the latter can be incredibly subjective..science is science. it tells us how the universe began and what we are and why we do what we do. religion is inherently illogical because it asks us to have faith (granted, science does too but let's not get bogged down in what's "real" and what ain't). and philosophy while amazing sometimes is just another human way of asking the big question and being unable to deal with the answer, which happens to be "just because". the historical study just lets us know that most governments, religions, and other such social constructs are just stupid.

or so says me. i can tell you don't agree and i want to hear why...
