Comment fic meme #2

Mar 05, 2012 15:28

After the first round of got_exchange we had a surprisingly successful comment fic meme going for a while (here's a list of all the fics that were written last time), so I thought it might be fun to do this again. (Like last time, it's posted on the mod account journal because I don't want to enable anonymous comments on the exchange community.)

Stannis/Davos or Stannis, Davos, Alternate POV emynithilien March 8 2012, 19:31:04 UTC
I'd like to see either Stannis/Davos or Stannis, Davos (anything about their relationship, really) seen from another character's POV. Choose whoever you want. I'm interested in seeing this because while we see Stannis from many different POV's, we only see Davos from his POV.

Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 1/2 linndechir March 9 2012, 04:34:13 UTC
This is set during the celebration after Robert & allies crushed the first Greyjoy rebellion. Ned's point of view, which means that a lot of Robert/Ned sneaked into this ficlet. I hope you don't mind.Ned is quiet as Robert roars one toast after the other, repeatedly interrupting himself to tell stories about his own exploits. They have won, yes, but one thing still bothers Ned as he looks through the large hall, frowning until he finally sees Stannis Baratheon. Ned thinks that Lord Stannis should have a place of honour at the king's table, as the commander of his fleet, the man to whom they owe a large part of their victory. But even if Robert invited him to his side, Stannis refused, and he looks like he is trying to stay as far away from his brother as possible without leaving the room ( ... )

Realising that Robert's brother does not need his company, Ned turns to leave and return to the king, but just then he sees Stannis take Davos' left hand, squeezing the shortened fingers. In the same moment Davos raises his unmaimed hand to the pouch around his neck.

That crazy fool wears the bones of the fingers Stannis chopped off around his neck. Ha! No wonder they get along, they're both bloody mad. It takes a madman to stomach my brother. It is odd, Ned agrees, remembering Robert's words. He understands the logic behind Stannis' judgement, but he cannot imagine any man who would befriend the lord who chopped off his fingers, let alone wear the bones around his neck every day. But they seem comfortable around each other, Robert's surly brother and this smuggler who bought a knighthood with onions. More comfortable than he and Robert are these days, Ned thinks with a sting of regret ( ... )

squeeeee. I don't really have time ot be coherent right now (have to run off to class in a minute) but but but Ned is so Ned in this. He just would go and make sure Stannis was justly thanked for his involvement in quashing the Greyjoy Rebellion. And of course he wouldn't recognise Davos, except in relation to Robert's crass rendition of the story about his knighthood & his fingers. And, god, Stannis, your guard is down and you're adorable. I am so glad you have Davos to take you out of yourself a little bit. Ned is jealous. It's adorable. Yes. This. Amazing. Thank you for being the best ever, Linn.

Thank you for reading all that stuff that I write in the middle of the night when I should be sleeping. ;)
I always thought that Ned and Stannis could have been epic BFFs if Ned wasn't Robert's best friend. As it is, Stannis would barely even talk to Ned. ANd he IS oddly adorable when he lets Davos take care of him. <3

It's my pleasure to read the amazing things you write when you ought to be sleeping. :D
Yeah, they definitely could have been. I do wonder whether that would have changed much though. I mean, it likely would have changed the whole course of the plot, re: Ned being made Hand. I'm not sure it would have changed Ned, personally, but it might have changed Stannis and the way he views other lords. What do you reckon? Davos taking care of Stannis is how it should be. <3

It's why I love this comment fic meme. It gives me reasons to write silly little scenes like this one and just post them right away, without obsessing over it for ages and feeling like it has to be perfect before I can post it anywhere.

I'm not sure how it would have changed the plot or anything, but I'm fairly sure it would have been good for Stannis to grow up with a boy his age who likes him and whom he likes. To be the one who has a BFF who's as close to him as a brother should be, rather than to be the guy who always hears, "Ned is more of a brother to me than you are, Stannis."
Then again, Ned and Stannis would be the most BORING friends ever. ;)

I love Davos taking care of Stannis. I don't know if you've seen the fill roflskate wrote for me, but it's beautiful and it also has Davos being there for Stannis.

Yeah, comment fic memes are a fantastic way to try out writing bits and pieces without the pressure of making it perfect.

Yeah, that's true. Stannis having someone who cared for him, growing up, would have made all the difference.
But, yeah, god, what would they ever do? It would be massively dull.

I saw that it fill was but I haven't got around to reading it yet. I'll definitely give it a go though. Stannis and Davos are so good for each other.

They'd sit around and talk about justice and duty. Kinda like Stannis and Jon, except that Stannis and Jon have a far more complex relationship and all those crazy power dynamics going on, while Stannis and Ned being brotherly would just be DUUUUUUULL. Almost hilariously dull.

Main reason I ship them so hard. Sometimes I realise how odd it is that these two are so healthy and functional and good for each other, considering the whole lord-bannerman-relationship and the fact that one of them chopped off the other's fingers. ;)

I can just see it now. They'd be sat under a tree in the Eerie, talking about how they're sure their brothers will do as they ought to - as heirs to their respective houses - and how important it is that they do as their brothers ask, even if they disagree. Then Ned would say, "Do you want to do something rash? Like sexually experiment with each other?" Then there would be the tiniest pause before he'd say, "No, no, it's beneath us. It would not be the honourable thing to do." Stannis would nod in agreement and they'd go back to their dull conversation.

Yeah, Stannis/Davos defies all reason in being that effing functional whilst existing on such a messed up premise. D'aww.

You successfully made it sound like the dullest pairing ever. Oh God. And the worst part is that they'd be utterly happy with each other.

I love pairings that should be messed up, but aren't. I mean, c'mon, Stannis is also old enough to be Jon's or Sansa's father, and he has fucked up power dynamics with them as well. ^^

Oh god. It's so true. So boring, so unromantic, so contented. Stannis/Ned is clearly the worst.

That's true! But, somehow, it works. I think because Stannis is Stannis & he's honourable and also because both Jon and, actually, Sansa do have some power in the relationship, too, one way or another.

I'm almost as horrified by this as by some of the Roose crackpairings that always come up in these memes.

I generally don't think that unbalanced power dynamics are necessarily unhealthy or unhappy, so it doesn't bother me all that much. Also, Stannis has very vulnerable sides despite the power he has over other people, and the people he loves will sooner or later find out about those vulnerabilities. Which restores a bit of balance.

D'awwwww. Stannis and Davos are super adorable. And so happy. <3 It's odd to see them happy.

But even Ned notices the UST. :D

I didn't plan to write them being happy, but then I realised that Ned seeing Stannis look UNHAPPY with some guy wouldn't really mean anything.

EVERYONE notices the UST. All of Westeros ships Stannis/Davos, except Selyse.

Davos: We're not a couple!
Melisandre: Yes you are.
Renly: Yes you are.
Fandom: Yes you are.
The Others: Yes you are.
Irri and Jhiqui: It is known.
Syrio: Just so.
