Lysa/Stannis (ASoS spoilers) juno_chan January 24 2013, 15:39:48 UTC
AU: Lysa is never 'ruined' by Petyr (maybe Petyr was never in Riverrun, or maybe Lysa just never slept with him), so Hoster Tully is able to propose a match between her and the new king's brother (and assumed new Lord of Storm's End).

(Kicking it off with bizarre prompts, OH YEEEEEAH)

I ranted about this very topic in a meta conversation some years ago. Stannis married Selyse Florent well after Robert was king, so why the hell would he have wed the daughter of a bannerman instead of the daughter of a great house as the King's brother (and heir until Robert had sons)? I think this AU makes so much sense, and need it in my life.

At last, Lysa had won something. She was going to King’s Landing to join her husband who would be the Hand of the King. Jon Arryn was neither as young nor as good looking as her sister’s husband, but Lysa was going to be one of the most important ladies in Westeros, second only to the queen. Catelyn, however, was being sent to the North were she would reign as lady over a frozen and remote castle. No one of consequence would care who Catelyn Stark was or what she thought. Finally, Lysa was going to be the Tully girl who mattered- if not in the eyes of her family, then in the eyes of Westeros ( ... )

Petyr’s preference for Catelyn hurt the most because Catelyn didn’t even see it while it was so painfully obvious to Lysa. When they played at kissing in the godswood, it seemed like Petyr was always so eager for Catelyn to take her turn at kissing him while he barely seemed to care when it was Lysa’s turn. Petyr would always ask Catelyn to dance first when there was feasting in the Great Hall which to most would appear to be Catelyn receiving the proper respect she was due as the eldest daughter, but Lysa could see the truth in Petyr’s eyes. After the nights that Lysa had spent in Petyr’s bed, she believed that Petyr’s affections had changed. She had given him her maidenhead. How could he not love her now ( ... )

OH LYSA. :( Her unhappiness is so palatable here, and I love her recognition that Catelyn is completely unaware of the competition between them because she so easily comes out on top on everything. This fits along well with my head canon that Lysa felt some sort of triumph that her husband would be Hand, and she would be a more important, prominent figure in court than Catelyn would be.

Great job - thanks for the fill!!

"My shield, my stalwart, my strong right hand."

I don't know, give me Aegon making Orys Hand of the King, or anything else with these two.

Ugh, no, Linn, no. I don't need to write more of this ship. I just- there is something amazing about Aegon making Orys his Hand because it's not a pre-existing role, right? Or if it's a pre-existing Westerosi custom or a position with a counterpart in Old Valyrian rulership systems, it's one Aegon could do away with or not choose to bring back. And he chooses ORYS. His brother. His shield, his stalwart, his strong right-hand. Oh goddd. There is so much room for this to be gorgeous and intimate and beautiful.

You got that wrong, bro, you DO need to write more of this ship. :P It would make sense to me that Aegon made up that role (and to give it such an awesome name, I mean, basically considering another person part of his body and his will), because this is the guy who basically went like "lol Imma gonna marry both my sisters and conquer a hugeass continent because I got bored on Dragonstone". And he seems to have no problem sharing his power, considering that he had two queens and didn't mind sharing his rule with them either.

Also, I'm pretty sure part of the reason he did that was to keep Orys close, by his side in King's Landing rather than away in Storm's End. Not that distances are a big problem when you have a dragon, but it would have seemed odd for the king to fly to Storm's End every other day.

AND AEGON DECIDED THAT THE HAND IS THE ONLY OTHER PERSON TO BE ALLOWED TO SIT ON THE THRONE HE DECIDED THAT ORYS COULD SIT ON THE FUCKING IRON THRONE. He basically said "hey bro, my realm belongs (almost) as much to you as to me".

I know I do but, Linn, why do you do this to me? Why do you make me ship these beautiful things?

I can absolutely see Aegon making the position just for Orys - because he wants to give Orys a position that is (at least) equal to his sisters', that acknowledges Orys' contribution to conquest and rule, and, yeah, which enables him to sit the Iron Throne and be symbolically a part of and an extension of Aegon, as king. Aaah. And, yes, of course he wanted to keep Orys close. Ugh. Glorious.

Something about younger Stannis and Davos (I just love cocky young smuggler-until-a-week-ago!Davos ;)).

COCKY DAVOS IS THE WORST. He's still really blunt but he's got swagger and he doesn't give a fuck what any of the highborn assholes think - except Stannis and, well, that's a whole different story, that is, and that's the one thing that checks him a little. UGH, I WANT ALL THE COCKY JUST-KNIGHTED DAVOS. Can you imagine his reaction to all the petty little poshboy knights? Hhey'd ask him how on earth he got his knighthood and he'd say he'd wager his way was the more noble for all their fine words. And they'd get all pissy with him - and then, just then, when he was thinking picking a fight here might've been foolish, he'd catch Stannis' eye and see that he approved and then just not give a shit about making a scene.

There just aren't enough fics about how these two slowly fell in love became so close. Davos is an observant guy, it would probably take him about two days to realise that Stannis hates everybody around him. And while book!Davos is kinda more polite and more careful, younger Davos who has no idea how court works really wouldn't mince his words, not the way Stannis would encourage him to speak his mind.
