Canon Character and Series: Nanako Dojima || Persona 4
In-Game Name: Nanako Dojima
Age: 8
Gender: Female
Position & Ship (first and second choice for position please): Ship [Convoy], Position [Errand Boy or Passenger]
Appearance: Even though Nanako leans on the petite side, she is in every way, an average young girl. She just makes four feet tall, and is pretty light weight for her age. Her straight brown hair is usually worn in pigtails that she likes to secure with cute hair ties. The most noticeable thing about her face is her large brown eyes that, framed by her bangs, project her every emotion. While she enjoys wearing cute dresses, she understands that she will have to make some sacrifices if she is to work on the ship, and she’s willing to wear awesome things… like overalls.
Personality: When you first meet Nanako, it would be easy to assume she’s a shy and serious young lady. She has a tendency to hide behind the nearest trusted figure in a situation of crisis (such as meeting a complete stranger) and stay silent as long as possible. She’ll still be polite, speak when spoken too, but she is not a girl who trusts others easily. This shyness can probably be attributed to being raised by a police officer, and because of his wary nature she also views strangers with extreme caution.
However, if you are to break through her shell, she will trust you without question. There is little middle ground with Nanako, you are either her friend whom she care deeply for, or you are a stranger. This black-and-white mentality is very telling of her age, and as a child she still hasn’t developed a sense of moral gray. The world is very simple to her, there are good people and bad people. Good people are polite, nice to others, do their homework and eat their vegetables. Bad people hurt others, lie, break promises, and act like bullies.
While she is slowly coming to terms with complex ideas like people who do good and bad things, she is slowly coming to term with other adult concepts with the help of her family members. It’s only fitting, after all, considering how mature she can be. Despite having such a child-like view of the world, Nanako is extremely responsible, and won’t shy away from unpleasant work. She thinks deeply about all of her actions, and doesn’t do anything without significant purpose driving her. She also has an acute sense of empathy that isn’t always common in children her age, and is able to make personal sacrifices for the good of others. She loves helping people, and loves to be useful more then anything else.
The most important thing to remember is that while Nanako is extremely mature, she is still a child. She was raised in a small village, and will always find new experiences that might seem mundane to some, but delight her to no end. She can still be judgmental, and will likely frustrate others when she refuses to condone lying (even if it is a while lie for the other’s sake), or bullying of any kind. It’s this combination of mature and innocent that makes her such a special little girl, who only wants to be loved and accepted.
Abilities/Weapons: Aside from big brown doe-eyes, Nanako does not have any special abilities.
How well can your character hack?: Not very well. She might be able to figure out the basics of the basics, but anything remotely complex would be incredibly difficult for her.
Weaknesses: Her greatest weakness is her dependency that comes hand in hand with her age. As much as she insists that she’s fine on her own, there is nothing that makes her as sad as feeling lonely. When abandoned she has a hard time looking beyond her situation, and makes the common mistake of thinking that she is in the center of everyone’s actions. She assumes that the people who are ignoring her don’t care about her, and has a hard time forgiving people who break promises. This combined with her naturally shy nature means that she can have a hard time interacting with strangers.
History: Nanako was born to a completely average life. She was born in a small mountain town, the only daughter of a brave police officer and his loving wife. It was here that she grew up in a home surrounded by love. While her father was often busy with work, it was okay, and her mother Chisato took over most of the responsibility involved in raising her. Sadly this world came crumbling down around the little family and their world was torn apart.
One year when Nanako was still extremely young, the nighttime festivities of the Long Night went terribly wrong. All Nanako was told by her heartbroken father was that her mother was dead, and magical spirits were the ones behind it. Before the accident she used to be fascinated by magic, but since the accident she’s grown up in fear of magic, and spends every Long Night huddled up in her bed under the covers, afraid of mystical creatures coming to take her in the night. She does her best to keep her fear hidden however, because she wants desperately to seem brave, and she doesn’t want to cause her father to worry about her.
Since that fateful day, life in the Dojima household changed dramatically. Dojima buried himself in work, and Nanako was forced to take charge of the household. Suddenly she was the one responsible for laundry, food… most everything except for income. They lived in this strange state for a while, Dojima afraid to take responsibility, and Nanako grew up thinking this must be what everyone’s family was like
However the family dynamic shifted when her cousin came to live with the Dojima family. At first he was just a scary high school student with a bowl cut that would eat dinner with her every night. But it turned out that there was something comforting about having another constant figure in the house, and it was probably around this time that Nanako realized how lonely she really felt.
The closer she grew to her new ‘Big Bro’, the more confused she became about what it means to be a family member. After all, the reason he was so nice to her, and talked to her at night, and ate dinner together… it was because they were family. It made her question what it meant to be ‘real’ family. She knew that her cousin wasn’t really her real brother, but they spent more time together then she and her father… He seemed to care about her in a way that she was afraid Dojima didn’t. She then started to ask him what it means to be real family, and came to the conclusion that the reason her Dad didn’t love her, was because she wasn’t his real daughter.
This came to a head as tensions rose in the household. Nanako lashed out and ran away, believing that her father wouldn’t come after her. Deep down inside, she really wanted her father to chase her, and she was so happy to know that he was worried about her. Souji talked to her and Dojima separately, and while he made a bond with each of them, he strengthened their bond with each other. Dojima realized that he couldn’t run away from raising his daughter, and Nanako realized that her father was missing his wife just as much as Nanako was missing her Mom.
Together they kept each other in check, and Nanako remained mostly unaware of the drama surrounding her family member’s lives. She didn’t really understand that Souji was investigating the murders, and as far as she was concerned, he could do no wrong. So whenever Dojima would yell at Souji, Nanako was the one to step in, concerned that they were fighting. Aside from these few incidents, their life was peaceful, and Nanako hadn’t been this happy in a long time.
Needless to say, she was crushed when her Big Bro announced he would be leaving, even if her relationship with her Dad was better then ever. She just continued to remind herself that she still had Dad, and Big Bro would be able to visit. But she put her foot down when her Dad said he had to leave to investigate as well. She pleaded, and insisted that she be allowed to accompany him, saying that she wanted to stay together because they were family.
In the end, Nanako was allowed to come as long as she did her best to keep out of the way, and be on her best behavior. While she’s a little nervous to be thrust on a ship full of strangers, she’s excited to see new things that she’s never seen before.

Long story short? Right now I'm not comfortable with anything too bad happening to her right now :( I'm undecided how I feel about kidnapping, it will depend a lot on the situation, and who is the one doing the kidnapping.
