[Big smile and thumbs-up! You're pretty smart, sir. No merman drowning for you.]

That was harsh. [And informative.] Do they eat fish?

[She shrugs. She neither knows nor cares what they eat. They drown people and you should not let them, no sir.]

It's a bit judgmental, that's all.

That seems unfair. You can't know that will happen.

[She just nods emphatically. SHE TOTALLY DOES.]

But how do you know?

Do you know how many cute, innocent baby animals with big gumdrop eyes had to die to make that parchment?

And to take beeswax from the hardworking honeybees!

We mustn't rob the natural world of its riches like common thieves! We have to protect it! Treasure it!

Oh, but who is that horrible man in the picture? Is he a merman? I hear they kidnap women and do terrible, terrible things.

[Looong blank stare, head cocked. She's pretty sure that no baby animals with big gumdrop eyes had to die at all, and that her depiction of Merfect as living in a moat and having a tail makes his merman-ness pretty explicit.

But you're a princess, so she's not going to point that out because it would be disrespectful. So. More staring.]

[This blank stare is greeted with a simpering, expectant smile. Which doesn't falter or fade. At all.]

[She just stares politely for a few more seconds, then smiles, shrugs and goes away. You're pretty weird, princess.]

[Talking squirrel is a go.]

Why would anyone fall for that? I ask you. Do you really believe a merman who trapped - presumably - in an enclosed lake or pond, who can't manage to extricate himself on his own would really have the ability to make you a monarch?

Think about it for a moment. He has no control over his own fate, but he can give you complete rule over a kingdom?

Next time, find a fisherman and allow him to handle your little aquatic friend.

[A big, expressive I-completely-agree-with-you shrug. Hey, she never fell for this, she's just making sure other people don't either.]

Clever enough to avoid the merman, but not quite so to write out a warning.

Unless you think everyone else is too simple to understand anything save pictures. I can't fault you for that.

...Do you own a hat?

[She shakes her head. In fact she has several hats - but not one she's inclined to let you ride in, meanypants.]
