I have a fabric windfall - 16 yards of dark mauve cotton velveteen - and am thus inspired to attempt a new gown for 12th night this January. I have narrowed down the possibilities to these three and would love feedback from my costuming freinds.
Option One - 1545 Conrad Faber von Kreuznach, Anna von Glauburg
Plusses:
- Flattering to a woman of my size - especially since hte sitter is simmilarly bulky.
- Will make good use of the fabric. Just look at the sleeves, and the pleats on the skirt.
Minuses:
- I've never made a German gown.
- Will need a new under-dress too.
Option Two - Moretto da Brescia, circa 1535: Portrait Of A Lady
Plusses:
- Also flattering to a bigger woman with the natural waist and low neck.
- The volume of the skirt will also use a good amount of fabric.
- With no middle layer, I won't overheat.
Minuses:
- This will need a corset (and, maybe) have to be supported itself.
- The bodice will have to be fitted immaculatley - and I'm not good at that.
Option Three - 1574, English gentlewomen by Lucas de Heere
Plusses:
- VERY persona-apropriate.
- Worn closed, I can fence in it.
- Will leave enough fabric to make a 2nd dress.
Minuses:
- This will need a corset.
- The whole thing will have to be fitted immaculatley - and I'm not good at that.
- It's not very fancy for 12th night.
Okay freinds - what do you think I should make?
