I tried to do a fresh legal install of WinXP on my computer. without going into endless detail about how and why it wouldn't work with me... but I got fed up after two hours of talking to a post

WINE is the utility that I've been using so far. It's basically like a console emulator (ZSNES, EPSXE, Nesticle, etc) but for Windows games.
DOSBox -which was the make-or-break program for me- has a Ubuntu version. Runs better than it did in Windows -and I can have a movie playing in the same screen or on a different desktop if I want (and no lag!).
Keep in mind, the test PC I'm using has only like, 512MB RAM...
I made the switch two years ago and never looked back. I've had some hiccups with things like USB webcams, but seriously, the fact that my machine 'just works' in every other respect has made the few little bumps totally worth it.
After I got familiar with Linux, I started to realize that Ubuntu is just a little more frou-frou than I actually care for, so I tried out a few other distros but never managed to get them 100% functional before school started up again and I needed something super-reliable... but I intend to switch soon. It's the perfect distro to start with, though... for sure.
Keep me posted on how it goes with gaming and Ubuntu--I've been curious about that for a while but since I don't really do any gaming, I haven't investigated it yet. I know a lot of things are supported in Wine, but that doesn't mean they run *well*...
That's awesome. DOSbox makes me very happy... I really need to buy a floppy drive to get my Sims games off their 3.5s one of these days because I can probably play them again. They haven't run since Win 3.1. Do you remember SimAnt and all that?
Probably not as cool as Baldur's Gate but...
Well, I can see you're in love. :) I am too. I can't believe I didn't switch earlier.
May I recommend a few programs you may not already have? GIMP(definitely in your package manager)... you'll want Azureus/Vuze for torrents, Nicotine(the Soulseek client)... oh and my faaavorite: ElectricSheep - http://electricsheep.org/
The fuck it isn't as cool as BG! I was destroying lives and human prosperity in SimCity long before I picked up 2nd Ed. DnD!
FYI, I currently have Sim-Ant, City 2000 (with Urban Renewal, XMas, and Network packs), City (original), Earth, Farm, Health, and Life in hard-data form, and all the different revisions/patches thereof, cleaned and virii/spyware free. I can get them to you on CD/USB if you'd like?
I forgot for a bit there how much I enjoyed SimCity... making the neighboring cities' children glow for Halloween when I place all my nuke-plants on the eastern-most border. I think I have the "talky" version, I'd have to check.
