No breakfast for you

After dancing up a storm at GZ -- I haven't worked up a sweat there in years, it's like another world when DJ Panic is away -- I really had a taste for some scrambled eggs and toast. And coffee. So we decided to head to the Uptown Diner on Hennepin. They're normally open after bartime ( Read more... )

You need a permit to be open evenings and nights, and then another permit to be open overnight? Do they have a permit to be open during the day as well? It all seems so stupid.

It's because the city has to provide additional police coverage whenever and wherever businesses are open. The fewer businesses in an area covered during a time block, the more expensive the permit, as I understand it.

If this Diner needs additional security coverage it should be up to them to obtain it.

*sigh* As someone who can easily envision the desire for police protection late at night, I wholeheartedly disagree.

Panic *wasn't* spinning?!?!? (reminds self to ding Craig about sending out red flares for a heads-up) Sheesh, we were hemming and hawing about going down to GZ, but couldn't muster much energy. If I'd have known Panic *wasn't* spinning. however ....

And yeah, the diner. Minnespolis is *SO* psychotic. On one hand, it wants to be known as a hip, with-it cosmopolitan burg; a "Minne-apple". But then it goes right back around stiffing the very all-hours vibrancy that makes NYC (or Vegas) what it is. As long as the ‘People's Republic of Minneapolis’ has this Sinclair Lewis back-water boosterism mentality, we will remain not much better than our sister city across the river, our 'Provincial Capitol’, where they hit the OFF switch on their downtown at 6pm.

I did hear Shiny Disco Ball, but other than that, the music was awesome. They played Siouxsie, Covenant, Skinny Puppy, Bowie, and some good newer stuff as well. It was just like the old days!

Yeah, the multiple permits is ridiculous. If I were the business owner, I might decline the extra permit just out of spite. Why pay for another permit ... to pay even more sales taxes to the city. In fact, I'd be tempted to just say, fuck it. Lay off the employees & close the doors. Most likely the owner will get hit with more income taxes under Obama too. I don't know why anyone would want to own a business in this country anymore, it's not worth the bureaucratic hassle.

St Paul sucks. The one good thing about it is that rents there tend to be lower. But that's for a reason.

Holy shit, that's right across the street from me. But you know what ... when you mentioned this story, it's the first building that had popped into my mind. I hadn't heard about this case. But I've seen seedy-looking characters hanging out in front many times, and the cops have been there more than once. That place was definately the "low spot" of the neighborhood for a while. But they must have evicted the troublesome tenants, that place has been cleaned up for several months now.

But "Updated: 2 years ago" puzzles me. How long ago did this happen?

I guess it was a single complaint, too. Tanya and I signed the petition for them right away! Love that place.

Someone complained? That sucks. I guess someone had to be a real busybody to find out that the permit they have isn't the "proper" one and then to call the city. Well, I hope they get the situation rectified soon, it sure is nice to have an after-hours restaurant nearby.
