Harvey wasn't sure how many minutes--hours?--had gone by since Crane left Nadine's apartment. He'd flipped the damn coin more times than he could remember. Now, as he sat on the couch--he let out a little laugh--now he'd turned to a higher authority ( Read more... )

She'd slept off most of the concoction Crane had given her at his apartment, though there was a faint weave to her step as Nadine let herself into her apartment. All she really wanted to do was go to bed-- curl up and sleep. Sleep in her nice, comfortable bed.

However, when she processed what she saw in her living room, she stopped, still near the closed door, and stared. Was he...? She managed to find her voice, however quietly the word came out. "Harvey...?"

Harvey looked over at Nadine, grip firmly on the gun, barrel still positioned against his face. "Maybe I can make both sides look alike," he told her, watching her expressions. He wanted her to be shocked. He wanted her to know that it couldn't be normal - nothing would ever be, ever again - and she had proven that - by going to Crane, by--by what?

She's not yours, Harvey, he was reminded. She never was. You refused that chance.

It didn't make the situation any less disconcerting, though.

"No!" Nadine moved as if to lurch forward but she restrained herself. If she approached... if she tried to take the gun from him... it might go off. Then it would be her fault-- if it wasn't already. Was this because of last night? Because of how close she'd gotten? "Please," she whispered. "Don't." She couldn't take that, couldn't take seeing that. She covered her mouth with her hand but didn't look away.

If she looked away and he pulled the trigger, she'd never forgive herself. She had to-- had to do something. But what could she do?

"Don't act like it matters, Nadine," he said, tone accusatory. "You can stop the pity party." He laughed a little, looking back at the gun. "I'll leave and you can feel free to have your boyfriend, Crane, over whenever you'd like."
